This book examines the lives of such men as Bukharin, Koestler, Gide, Diljas, Silone and Dubcek, and describes the self-deception and despair of those who embraced and recoiled from communism. Murphy argues that the self-deception of the communist is not merely a product of circumstance, but integral to the very idea itself.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":49504010993937,"sku":"GOR006168625","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"US \/ WELL_READ \/ SBYB","offer_id":50191653339409,"sku":"CIN0029223156A","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/0029223156.jpg?v=1750811540"},{"product_id":"janeway-s-immunobiology-book-kenneth-murphy-9780815342434","title":"Janeway's Immunobiology","description":"Janeway’s Immunobiology is a textbook that introduces the immune system in all its aspects to undergraduates, and also provides a treatment of the subject that is comprehensive enough to be useful to graduate students interested in research, and to medical students focused on clinical applications. The Eighth Edition has been thoroughly revised and updated and is available in both print and e-book formats. Janeway’s Immunobiology continues to set the standard for currency and authority with its clear writing style and organization, uniform art program, and scientific accuracy. It presents a consistent point of view throughout—that of the host’s interaction with an environment containing many species of potentially harmful microorganisms. The full-color art program is conceptually coherent and illustrates the processes and mechanisms underlying the concepts in the text. The 16 chapters in this readable, accessible textbook are organized and presented in such a way as to help deliver a complete one-semester immunology course, beginning with innate immunity, then moving to adaptive immunity, and ending with applied clinical immunology. Discussion questions are provided at the end of Chapters 2 to 16. These questions can be used for review, or as the basis for discussion in class or in informal study groups. Summaries conclude each section and each chapter. As in previous editions, a caduceus icon in the margins indicates topics which are correlated to Case Studies in Immunology, Sixth Edition by Geha and Notarangelo. New in the Eighth Edition Innate immunity has been updated and expanded and is now presented in two separate chapters (Chapters 2 and 3), as well as being further emphasized in the rest of the textbook. Chapter 2 covers antimicrobial peptides and the complement system, and Chapter 3 deals with cellular innate receptors and cell-mediated innate immunity (e.g. TLRs, phagocytosis, NK cells, interferon production, innate-like lymphocytes). The section on complement has been reworked and reconceived—explaining the lectin pathway first—making it easier to teach by placing it into the context of innate recognition. Evolution is now incorporated throughout the text, helping students see similar strategies used by different organisms. The text and figures of Chapter 7 Signaling Through Immune System Receptors have been revised to present a cohesive synthesis of signaling for immunology, focusing on improved illustration of antigen recognition signaling and lymphocyte activation. Signaling through other receptors is dealt with wherever appropriate throughout the book. Updated chapter on B-cell immune responses (Chapter 10), especially on trafficking of B cells in peripheral lymphoid organs (e.g. lymph nodes) and the locations at which they encounter antigen. Coverage of mucosal immunity (Chapter 12) has been brought up to date, including responses to the commensal microbiota and the role of specialized dendritic cells and the regulatory T cells in maintaining tolerance to food antigens and commensal bacteria. Chapter 13, Failures of Host Defense Mechanisms, has been reorganized and revised to structure an understanding of primary immunodeficiencies in the context of developmental pathways. Chapter 16, Manipulation of the Immune Response, has been heavily revised to include a greater emphasis on clinical issues and a complete update of immunotherapeutics and vaccines. Many new and revised figures illustrate the processes and mechanisms underlying the concepts presented in the text. The icons used have been updated and expanded to incorporate a new emphasis on signaling pathways. New references have been added throughout the text.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":49512664957201,"sku":"GOR008657815","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"US \/ GOOD \/ SBYB","offer_id":49530728808721,"sku":"CIN0815342438G","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ WELL_READ \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":49533097115921,"sku":"GOR007973561","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":49565071442193,"sku":"GOR005752007","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"US \/ VERY_GOOD \/ SBYB","offer_id":50256127164689,"sku":"CIN0815342438VG","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"US \/ WELL_READ \/ SBYB","offer_id":50456278860049,"sku":"CIN0815342438A","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ LIKE_NEW \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":51587930325265,"sku":"GOR014338101","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/B006UF87Y0.jpg?v=1750979011"},{"product_id":"unquiet-vietnam-book-kenneth-murphy-9781903933107","title":"Unquiet Vietnam","description":"From Michael Herr's classic bestseller \"Dispatches\" to epic films such as \"Platoon, the Vietnamese War\" has been dissected in an avalanche of books, television series and films. But what of the Vietnamese themselves as a people and a culture? It is like the war in Iraq - we know of the horrendous destruction that is involved, but not of the human scale of the horror we see inflicted on another nation. Who are the people suffering at the hands of international politics? In this gripping narrative, Ken Murphy describes his visits to modern Vietnam through the people he meets and through their background, which he pieces together from what they tell him. His quest is to retrace the ancient Vietnamese civilisation that is on the brink of finally being extinguished under an avalanche of foreign investment after having resisted a violent mixture of French Colonialism, American imperialism. Visiting people such as the last remaining member of the Vietnamese imperial family, he becomes intrigued by Indochina's twisted history as the military playground of empires--like the Middle East today--and aims to uncover the truth about a culture struggling to stay alive in an ever-merging global climate before it has disappeared forever. His interest is highly personal. Growing up during the Vietnam War protests that defined the 1970s, Ken Murphy's image of Vietnam had always been defined by its deep emotionally charge--the elder brother he looked up to was one of the last American soldiers to be killed during the war. On a chance first visit, however, he discovered how blinkered this view was, as it left no room for the Vietnamese people themselves. As he once again confronts history he finds himself falling in love with the country through vivid portraits of the people he meets, from the US-educated Khmer to ancient trading families and ordinary citizens trying to recreate their lives after the collapse of Communism, the latest empire to colonise their country.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":49564438528273,"sku":"GOR003938736","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/1903933102.jpg?v=1751412716"},{"product_id":"unquiet-vietnam-book-kenneth-murphy-9781783341276","title":"Unquiet Vietnam","description":"Kenneth Murphy's brother was one of the last US soldiers to be killed during the Vietnam.
