Which are the dominant social policy concepts and how are they contested? What characterises social policy language in specific countries and regions of the world and how do social concepts travel between countries? Addressing such questions in a systematic manner for the first time, this edited collection, written by a cross-disciplinary group of leading social policy researchers, analyses the concepts and language used to make sense of contemporary social policy. The volume focuses on OECD countries located on four different continents: Asia, Australasia, Europe, and North America. Combining detailed chapters on particular countries with broader comparative chapters, the book strikes a rare balance between case studies and transnational perspectives. It will be of interest to academics and students in social policy, social work, political science, sociology, history, and public administration, as well as practitioners and policy makers.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ -","offer_id":51192629920017,"sku":"","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"US \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":51192632410385,"sku":"NIN9781447306443","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52140731629841,"sku":"NLS9781447306443","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/1447306449.jpg?v=1792076026"},{"product_id":"analysing-social-policy-concepts-and-language-book-klaus-petersen-9781447306436","title":"Analysing Social Policy Concepts and Language","description":"Social policy scholars and practitioners work with concepts such as welfare state and social security but where do these concepts come from and how has their meaning changed over time? This book examines the relationship between the two to uncover the impact of international context on social policy developments.The Cold War and Welfare State Development in Industrialized Countries offers a comparative and interdisciplinary perspective on whether, how, and to what extent the Cold War influenced the development of the welfare state in European and North American countries between 1947 and 1989. Linking the two master-narratives of the postwar era, it provides a systematic analysis of possible causal mechanisms linking the Cold War and the welfare state. It offers an innovative perspective on how the international context framed and affected, first, the massive expansion of social security and welfare programs during the so-called Golden Age of the welfare state, and second, during the period of welfare state crisis and re-structuring since the late 1970s. It considers the systemic competition between capitalism and communism and its influence on welfare state development through five main causal mechanisms. In so doing, it scrutinizes the Cold War's impact on the same set of policies across a broad selection of comparable industrialized countries and demonstrates both theoretically and empirically that national security and social security developed together during the Cold War era.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ GARDNERS","offer_id":53208582160657,"sku":"NGR9780198990291","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"US \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":67844123656465,"sku":"NIN9780198990291","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9780198990291.jpg?v=1786109415"}],"url":"https:\/\/www.worldofbooks.com\/en-au\/collections\/author-books-by-klaus-petersen.oembed","provider":"World of Books ","version":"1.0","type":"link"}
