Its function was to service locomotives operating to and from Margam Knuckle Yard, which was acclaimed as being the most highly mechanised in the United Kingdom when it was opened in 1960.One of Margam's iconic freight trains was the Port Talbot Docks to Llanwern Steel Works iron ore train. When it commenced running in March 1976, it was acclaimed as being one of the heaviest freight trains running in the United Kingdom. When Canton Traction Maintenance Depot closed in May 2004 many of its skilled staff transferred to Margam Servicing Depot together with some of its maintenance work. As a result of this, an extension was built onto the existing depot and equipped with a 2.5-ton overhead crane. Margam Servicing Depot eventually closed on 1 August 2009. Here, Martin Bray offers a wonderful photographic tribute to an important chapter in the story of the rail scene of South Wales.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":49509393400081,"sku":"GOR013126804","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ GARDNERS","offer_id":49739540955409,"sku":"NGR9781398103726","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ LIKE_NEW \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":51067337081105,"sku":"GOR013664661","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/1398103721.jpg?v=1761645941"},{"product_id":"canton-depot-book-martin-bray-9781398103849","title":"Canton Depot","description":"Canton Traction Maintenance Depot was rebuilt and opened on 18 September 1964 as a heavy maintenance and servicing facility for diesel locomotives, shunters and multiple units. The depot had facilities to carry out collision-damage repairs, power-unit changes, wheel turning and load-bank testing. A very close working relationship with its customers resulted in hire contracts with Valley Lines and Allied Steel \u0026amp; Wire Limited. With the demise of coal, steel and mail traffic, and excess maintenance capacity in the company, the depot sadly closed on 30 May 2004 and some of the skilled staff and minor maintenance work was transferred to Margam Servicing Depot. With a wealth of previously unpublished images, Martin Bray offers a loving tribute to this popular South Wales railway depot.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ GARDNERS","offer_id":49752067965201,"sku":"NGR9781398103849","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":51395305177361,"sku":"GOR014254882","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/1398103845.jpg?v=1778148447"},{"product_id":"stagecoach-south-wales-book-martin-bray-9781398121997","title":"Stagecoach South Wales","description":"Rare and previously unpublished images documenting Stagecoach's presence in South Wales, its depots, bus stations, routes and vehicles.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ -","offer_id":51628562448657,"sku":"","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ GARDNERS","offer_id":51628563136785,"sku":"NGR9781398121997","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":53140884029713,"sku":"GOR014770728","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":53142984884497,"sku":"GOR014771217","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ LIKE_NEW \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":53216335823121,"sku":"GOR014809826","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/1398121991.jpg?v=1764239188"},{"product_id":"sncf-workshops-depots-and-yards-book-martin-bray-9781398120464","title":"SNCF Workshops, Depots and Yards","description":"French Rail (SNCF) has always been a magnet for British rail enthusiasts to enjoy workshop, depot and yard visits together with travel by locomotive-hauled passenger trains. Until recently, permits have been made readily available for enthusiasts to visit these installations, some of which can now be reached within the hour by air and just under three hours by Eurostar.  Like most countries, including the United Kingdom, many depots and yards have closed in France due to the cessation of wagon load traffic, recession and introduction of the TGV and new bi-modal passenger rolling stock. SNCF still has some extremely large but not so busy marshalling yards strategically located throughout France, where limited hump shunting is still being performed. While most of the main workshops have closed, there are still some large operational depots, including picturesque roundhouses that were favoured by SNCF for the maintenance and stabling of locomotives.  Martin Bray has been taking photographs for over forty years and this fascinating selection features many of the installations of SNCF workshops, depots and yards located throughout France.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ -","offer_id":51628875514129,"sku":"","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ GARDNERS","offer_id":51628875710737,"sku":"NGR9781398120464","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ LIKE_NEW \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":51809414840593,"sku":"GOR014409177","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/1398120464.jpg?v=1751304172"}],"url":"https:\/\/www.worldofbooks.com\/en-au\/collections\/author-books-by-martin-bray.oembed","provider":"World of Books ","version":"1.0","type":"link"}
