This, however, is a myth that developed long after Roman control of Britain came to an end, when the British Empire was at its height in the late nineteenth and twentieth centuries. Britain was, in fact, one of the least enthusiastic outposts of the Roman Empire. Many Britons failed to acknowledge the Roman lifestyle at all, while many others were only outwardly Romanised, clinging to, or only mildly adapting, their former identities throughout the occupation. Even the Roman Army in Britain became chronically rebellious and a source of instability that ultimately affected the whole Empire. As the power of Rome weakened in the fourth and fifth centuries, the Britons abandoned Rome and almost all aspects of Mediterranean culture, Britannia becoming a land of warring kingdoms.
A fresh look at the text which introduced for the first time some of the key figures in British myth and legend.
The human and animal remains discovered at Piltdown, near Lewes in Sussex almost 100 years ago were at the time hailed as the 'missing link' between ape and man. The Historia Regum Britanniae, or History of the Kings of Britain, was written in around 1136 by Geoffrey of Monmouth and purports to tell the story of the kings of Britain from the settlement of the island by the Trojan Brutus, grandson of Aeneas, through to the seventh century when the Anglo-Saxons had taken control of much of Britain. History of the Kings of Britain was highly popular during the Middle Ages and copies spread across the whole of western Europe, with over 200 manuscripts surviving from the period. It went on to influence texts into the sixteenth century and was one of the first to weave together the legend of King Arthur as well as the stories of King Lear and Cymbeline, both later immortalised by Shakespeare. Although it purports to be history, History of the Kings of Britain has long been recognised as thoroughly unreliable and considered to be a literary work of national myth instead. In this book, Dr Miles Russell takes another look at Geoffrey of Monmouth's work and argues that there is verifiable archaeological and historical information to be found there, possibly deriving from a lost British source also used by other Dark Age texts.
rough-quarries-rocks-and-hills-john-pull-and-the-neolithic-flint-mines-of-sussex-book-miles-russell-9781842170540
Rough Quarries, Rocks and Hills. Russell provides an accessible overview of the local power structures in late Iron Age and early Roman Britain, using the most up-to-date archaeological evidence, before forensically examining the images on Caratacus' coins and identifying the fields of conflict, while also reassessing his life and deeds as they appear in ancient sources, such as Tacitus and Cassius Dio.

Russell also studies the relationships between Caratacus and other British leaders of the time, such as Boudicca, Verica, Cartimandua and Togodumnus.
