Because the elegies contain passionate expressions of political protest as well as shamanistic themes of magic spells and wandering spirits, they present an alternative face of early Chinese culture; one that does not align with orthodox Confucianism. This translation employs literary English devices in order to emphasise the original structure of these Chinese poems. It also examines the extraordinarily vivid diction of the source texts, including of onomatopoeia, ornate descriptions, exotic flowers, dramatic landscapes, metaphors and startling similes.   This translation will be based on the original anthology compiled in the Han dynasty by Wang Yi (2nd century CE), and contains a selection of poems that were collected from the 3rd century BCE through the Han dynasty. The anthology provides readers with an understanding of Chinese literature and its evolution from free-spirited, mythico-religious songs to the more formal, polished style of the Han court.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ GARDNERS","offer_id":49742534541585,"sku":"NGR9780198818311","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"US \/ VERY_GOOD \/ SBYB","offer_id":50827514020113,"sku":"CIN0198818319VG","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"US \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":50999990452497,"sku":"NIN9780198818311","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":53062130237713,"sku":"GOR014721610","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":53062977454353,"sku":"GOR014722471","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/0198818319.jpg?v=1772275489"},{"product_id":"chinese-poetry-as-soul-summoning-book-nicholas-morrow-williams-9781621966234","title":"Chinese Poetry as Soul Summoning","description":null,"brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ -","offer_id":51040809648401,"sku":"","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"US \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":51040813056273,"sku":"NIN9781621966234","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52455192363281,"sku":"NLS9781621966234","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/1621966232.jpg?v=1751408723"},{"product_id":"dialogues-in-the-dark-book-nicholas-morrow-williams-9780674299993","title":"Dialogues in the Dark","description":"Dialogues in the Dark traces how Chinese readers and scholars since the Han dynasty have variously interpreted the ancient poem Heavenly Questions (Tianwen), an enigmatic work attributed to Qu Yuan (fl. ca. 300 BCE). In this volume, eight interviews with and essays by Jao are translated faithfully into English, giving a sampling of his diverse insights into literature and its broader significance. Topics range from the religious beliefs underpinning the earliest Chinese writings, to the influence of Chan Buddhism on Chinese poetics, to Gu Yanwu's (1613-1682) poetic protest against the Manchu conquest. Collectively the essays demonstrate how literary art and spiritual beliefs have been intertwined throughout Chinese history.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"US \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52692954218769,"sku":"NIN9789004693173","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9789004693173.jpg?v=1768561082"},{"product_id":"imitations-of-the-self-jiang-yan-and-chinese-poetics-book-nicholas-morrow-williams-9789004282230","title":"Imitations of the Self: Jiang Yan and Chinese Poetics","description":"Imitations of the Self reevaluates the poetry of Jiang Yan (444–505), long underappreciated because of its pervasive reliance on allusion, by emphasizing the self-conscious artistry of imitation. In context of “imitation poetry,” the popular genre of the Six Dynasties era, Jiang’s work can be seen as the culmination of central trends in Six Dynasties poetry. His own life experiences are encoded in his poetry through an array of literary impersonations, reframed in traditional literary forms that imbue them with renewed significance. A close reading of Jiang Yan’s poetry demonstrates the need to apply models of interpretation to Chinese poetry that do justice to the multiplicity of authorial self-representation.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":53516849152273,"sku":"NLS9789004282230","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9789004282230.jpg?v=1778286850"},{"product_id":"philological-investigations-book-nicholas-morrow-williams-9789004744677","title":"Philological Investigations","description":"Philological Investigations explores topics ranging from the cultural significance of aging in early China to the hallucinogenic properties of plants in ancient Chinese poetry; from historical attempts at identifying the location of a famous tidal bore, to a new translation of a recently- excavated debate between tea and wine. In each case, the authors attempt to use philological methods of reading and interpretation to recover original meanings and implications in Chinese sources. The twelve chapters collectively illustrate how modern scholarship on Chinese culture continues to engage with the methods of premodern philology from both Europe and China.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"US \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":53657424724241,"sku":"NIN9789004744677","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9789004744677.jpg?v=1781419134"}],"url":"https:\/\/www.worldofbooks.com\/en-au\/collections\/author-books-by-nicholas-morrow-williams.oembed","provider":"World of Books ","version":"1.0","type":"link"}
