Born out of the growing threat from the air in the First World War, the quest for survivability developed to meet Hitler's Blitzkreig and this intensified during the Cold War nuclear era. Of the many sites described, the huge Corsham complex was arguably the most significant. This is the story of engineering achievement and bureaucratic bungling and even the most informed reader will learn something new. The book describes in fascinating detail a vast umbrella of radar stations that spanned the North American continent and the North Atlantic from the Aleutian Islands through Canada to the North Yorkshire Moors, all centred upon an enormous secret control centre buried hundreds of feet below Cheyenne Mountain in Colorado. This is complemented in the United Kingdom with a chain of secret radars codenamed 'Rotor' built in the early 1950's, and eight huge, inland sector control centres, built over 100' underground at enormous cost.  The book reveals the various bunkers built for the U.S Administration, including the Raven Rock alternate war headquarters (the Pentagon's wartime hideout), the Greenbrier bunker for the Senate and House of Representatives, and the Mount Weather central government headquarters amongst others. Developments in Canada, including the Ottawa 'Diefenbunker' and the regional government bunkers are also studied. In the UK there were the London bunkers and the Regional War rooms built in the 1950's to protect against the Soviet threat, and their replacement in 1958 by much more hardened, underground Regional Seats of Government in the provinces, and the unique Central Government War Headquarters at Corsham. Finally the book examines the provision, (or more accurately, lack of provision), of shelter space for the general population, comparing the situation in the USA and the UK with some other European countries and with the Soviet Union.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":49664300744977,"sku":"GOR004377320","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":49786010435857,"sku":"GOR002408509","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"US \/ VERY_GOOD \/ SBYB","offer_id":50871591797009,"sku":"CIN1844155080VG","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/1844155080.jpg?v=1751122549"},{"product_id":"cold-war-secret-nuclear-bunkers-book-nj-mccamley-9780850527469","title":"Cold War Secret Nuclear Bunkers","description":"The threat of nuclear attack changed the face of warfare, and the early 1950s witnessed a massive and hugely expensive, yet highly secret, building programme. Even today, the vast majority of people are unaware of the scale and location of these sites. Nick McCamley uncovers the facts in this enthralling book which describes these extraordinary installations including the vast umbrella of radar stations. Interesting and shocking comparisons are made about the provision, or lack of it, for the survival of the civil population between the USA, UK and other countries. A truly rivetting and revealing book.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":49936499769617,"sku":"GOR003958138","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ WELL_READ \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":50325973303569,"sku":"GOR006278051","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ LIKE_NEW \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":50414533378321,"sku":"GOR012317309","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/0850527465.jpg?v=1751444181"},{"product_id":"secret-history-of-chemical-warfare-book-nj-mccamley-9781844153411","title":"Secret History of Chemical Warfare","description":"Chemical weapons, banned under the Geneva Conventions, are the subject of revulsion and contempt to fighting men.  Yet as Weapons of Mass Destruction no country with significant military capacity is able to afford to ignore them.  They became, after an initial period of use during the Great War, weapons of deterrent. Despite the apparent military misgivings, much public hysteria about the horrors of chemical warfare was whipped-up by the media throughout the inter-war years.  The book looks at the way in which this hysteria was manipulated and channelled by the British Government to ensure the establishment of a powerful and effective civilian anti-gas air raids precaution mentality which was then insidiously refocused upon the real threat, which was from high explosives and incendiary bombs. A major chapter is devoted to the use of chemical weapons in WW1, which was seldom successful and often counter-productive being indiscriminate in their effect.  Another chapter covers the Italian use of CW in Ethiopia and by the Japanese against Chinese troops and civilians in the Sino-Japanese War. The latter part of the book examines the way in which the chemical warfare initiative moved away from the domination of the chemical industry into the control of the intelligence services through the Cold War years.  Paranoia, and the irrational assumption that whatever weapons one side had then the other must have developed something even more frightening, led to the accumulation of vast deterrent stockpiles of weapons ' mainly nerve gas projectiles.  By the early 1990s the magnitude of these stockpiles frightened governments into a programme of mutual stock reduction and destruction, which has led to a potential environmental disaster.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ LIKE_NEW \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":50248381399313,"sku":"GOR010673255","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":50269341876497,"sku":"GOR001751414","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":53097616310545,"sku":"GOR009019101","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ WELL_READ \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":53114525516049,"sku":"GOR013498755","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/B0082OSW2E.jpg?v=1751421480"}],"url":"https:\/\/www.worldofbooks.com\/en-au\/collections\/author-books-by-nj-mccamley.oembed","provider":"World of Books ","version":"1.0","type":"link"}
