From the first stirrings of industrialism to the definitive arrival of globalization, artists, craftspeople and designers have engaged with modernization in order to make sense of the transformations it continually imposes. They have been, by turns, brutally critical and profoundly idealistic about the ongoing state of things. The Modern Ideal explores the idea of modernity, returning it to its historical context and showing how theory and practice in the modern visual arts emerged over three centuries. Concepts which are central to the meaning of modernity are explained, including style, modernization, progress, ideology and universality, and movements across all disciplines are discussed, from neoclassicism to postmodernism. The rise of idealism in the modern visual arts is also explored: the attempt to create a definitive, positive style that was capable of transforming not only art but society as a whole, became the obsessive quest of succeeding generations of artists, architects and designers. By dealing with issues at large in the contemporary art and design scene, and by speculating about the next phase of modern practice, the book identifies the collapse of idealism in the modern arts as being of central concern today.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":49563489403153,"sku":"GOR006221050","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"US \/ GOOD \/ SBYB","offer_id":50765046939921,"sku":"CIN1851774696G","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/1851774696.jpg?v=1751423371"},{"product_id":"modernism-in-design-book-paul-greenhalgh-9780948462115","title":"Modernism In Design","description":"Includes essays on design that cover Modernism's fortunes in Germany, Italy, Sweden, Britain, Spain, Belgium and the USA.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":49566050025745,"sku":"GOR003700651","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":50827160158481,"sku":"GOR004256473","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ WELL_READ \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":53209698107665,"sku":"GOR011829289","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/0948462116.jpg?v=1767350777"},{"product_id":"masterpieces-book-paul-greenhalgh-9780946009633","title":"Masterpieces","description":null,"brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":49579842208017,"sku":"GOR008689477","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":50445352501521,"sku":"GOR012806573","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/0946009635.jpg?v=1751235089"},{"product_id":"essence-of-art-nouveau-book-paul-greenhalgh-9780810940819","title":"The Essence of Art Nouveau","description":"Highlights the key elements of art nouveau through text and photographs of its influence on buildings, furniture, glassware, textiles, and more.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":49637934268689,"sku":"GOR005896878","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":50012227797265,"sku":"GOR008476940","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"US \/ VERY_GOOD \/ SBYB","offer_id":51685075976465,"sku":"CIN0810940817VG","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"US \/ GOOD \/ SBYB","offer_id":52508299886865,"sku":"CIN0810940817G","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/0810940817.jpg?v=1751139109"},{"product_id":"fair-world-book-paul-greenhalgh-9781906506094","title":"Fair World","description":"The great World's Fairs and Expositions staged around the world since the mid-19th century were among the largest and most dramatic cultural events ever staged. As a core craft technology, pottery has underpinned domesticity, business, religion, recreation, architecture, and art for millennia. Indeed, the history of ceramics parallels the development of human society. This fascinating and very human history traces the story of ceramic art and industry from the Ancient Greeks to the Romans and the medieval world; Islamic ceramic cultures and their influence on the Italian Renaissance; Chinese and European porcelain production; modernity and Art Nouveau; the rise of the studio potter, Art Deco, International Style and Mid-Century Modern, and finally, the contemporary explosion of ceramic making and the postmodern potter. Interwoven in this journey through time and place is the story of the pots themselves, the culture of the ceramics, and their character and meaning. Ceramics have had a presence in virtually every country and historical period, and have worked as a commodity servicing every social class. They are omnipresent: a ubiquitous art. Ceramic culture is a clear, unique, definable thing, and has an internal logic that holds it together through millennia. Hence ceramics is the most peculiar and extraordinary of all the arts. At once cheap, expensive, elite, plebeian, high-tech, low-tech, exotic, eccentric, comic, tragic, spiritual, and secular, it has revealed itself to be as fluid as the mud it is made from. Ceramics are the very stuff of how civilized life was, and is, led. This then is the story of human society's most surprising core causes and effects.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ GARDNERS","offer_id":49739781046545,"sku":"NGR9781474239707","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":50302385324305,"sku":"GOR011325136","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"US \/ VERY_GOOD \/ SBYB","offer_id":51322061750545,"sku":"CIN1474239706VG","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"US \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":51877996396817,"sku":"NIN9781474239707","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"US \/ GOOD \/ SBYB","offer_id":51879585022225,"sku":"CIN1474239706G","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/1474239706.jpg?v=1751371253"},{"product_id":"pablo-picasso-book-paul-greenhalgh-9781916133693","title":"Pablo Picasso","description":"This book reveals that Pablo Picasso wasn't simply a figurehead of the Modern Age. He grew up in the 19th century: the extraordinary mixture of values that was fin de siècle Europe penetrated deep into his personality, remaining with him through his life. While he was the quintessential Modern in so many ways, he was also a Victorian, and this duality explains the complexity of his genius. He was simultaneously looking forwards and backwards, and feeding off the efforts of others, before developing his own idioms for depicting the contemporary world.     The young artist recognised that society was increasingly in a process of transformation, not in a transitory or temporary way, but permanently, under the inexorable pressures of modernisation. He realised that the emergence of Modern art through the last quarter of the century was a product of this transformation. Throughout his life, Picasso would feel the tension between modernity and the histories it replaced. He would also struggle with the role of the individual, and subjectivity, in this new environment.     Each chapter shows how the young artist embraced successive styles at large in the art world of his time. By the age of 14 well capable of drawing in a highly competent Beaux Arts mode, he drew in a Classicist manner of redolent of Ingres, or early Degas. He then moved through various forms of Impressionism, Symbolism, and Post-Impressionism, before arriving in his early twenties at his first wholly individual style, the Blue period, albeit that all these earlier sources were still evident. The Rose period followed, after which the artist began a truly seminal period of experimentation which culminated in the development of Cubism. By 1910, Cubism had become a fully mature vision, practiced by a wide range of artists. It was to provide the springboard for much Modern art across the disciplines, and it positioned Picasso as perhaps the single most important artist of the new century.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ GARDNERS","offer_id":49743636463889,"sku":"NGR9781916133693","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":51544007704849,"sku":"GOR012701469","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/191613369X.jpg?v=1751187228"},{"product_id":"art-nouveau-book-paul-greenhalgh-9780810942196","title":"Art Nouveau","description":"A lavish volume created to accompany a major museum exhibition considers the popular and influential style of Art Nouveau and includes a wealth of illustrations as well as rare period photographs showcasing all mediums from Tiffany lampshades to Lalique jewelry.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"US \/ GOOD \/ SBYB","offer_id":50130041897233,"sku":"CIN0810942194G","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"US \/ VERY_GOOD \/ SBYB","offer_id":50161325736209,"sku":"CIN0810942194VG","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"US \/ WELL_READ \/ SBYB","offer_id":50925790167313,"sku":"CIN0810942194A","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/0810942194.jpg?v=1751139111"},{"product_id":"quotations-on-design-and-material-culture-book-paul-greenhalgh-9780719039652","title":"Quotations on Design and Material Culture","description":"A collection of comments or statements by critics, commentators and practitioners on the visual arts and design. Known in Britain as Great Exhibitions, in France as Expositions Universelles and in America as World's Fairs, the genre became a self-perpetuating phenomenon, the extraordinary cultural spawn of industry and empire. Thoroughly in the spirit of the first industrial age, the exhibitions illustrated the relation between money and power, and revelled in the belief that the uncontrolled expression of that power was the quintessence of freedom. Philanthropy found its place on exhibition sites functioning as a conscience to the age although even here morality was inextricably linked to economic efficiency and expansion. Imperial achievement was celebrated to the full at international exhibitions. Nevertheless, most World's Fairs maintained an imperial element and out of this blossomed a vibrant racism. Between 1889 and 1914, the exhibitions became a human showcase, when people from all over the world were brought to sites in order to be seen by others for their gratification and education. In essence, the English national profile fabricated in the closing decades of the nineteenth century was derived from the pre-industrial world. The Fine Arts were an important ingredient in any international exhibition of calibre. This book incorporates comparative work on European and American empire-building, with the chronological focus primarily on the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, when these cultural exchanges were most powerfully at work. -- .","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":50274509881617,"sku":"GOR010196239","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ WELL_READ \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":50971555168529,"sku":"GOR005940156","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/0719023009.jpg?v=1763126626"},{"product_id":"art-nouveau-book-paul-greenhalgh-9780894682797","title":"Art Nouveau","description":null,"brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ -","offer_id":50462682579217,"sku":"","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"US \/ GOOD \/ SBYB","offer_id":50462682972433,"sku":"CIN0894682792G","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/0894682792.jpg?v=1751202489"},{"product_id":"art-nouveau-book-paul-greenhalgh-9781911736189","title":"Art Nouveau","description":"Leading expert Paul Greenhalgh presents a groundbreaking visual and scholarly journey through Art Nouveau – spanning 26 countries and enriched with stunning new photography. The Art Nouveau style dramatically impacted architecture, transforming attitudes to late-19th and early-20th century building practices, and making possible the rise of the various Modern Movements in architecture and design. Formed by the social and political environments of this turbulent period in European history, Art Nouveau was a complex, multifaceted phenomenon from its inception, changing shape continually through time and from country to country. This book unravels the various threads that constituted the style, offering fresh philosophical and aesthetic perspectives and providing a definition of what Art Nouveau actually was, and what it meant to its architects and designers. For the first time in a single volume, it shows the extraordinary spread of the style including in countries not usually recognised as being part of the story, with twenty-six countries represented through superb new photography. The author and photographer had privileged access to many famous buildings, as well as lesser-known architectural masterpieces. Uniquely, this book also considers the later heritage of Art Nouveau, and its long-term effects on subsequent architecture.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ -","offer_id":51621964382481,"sku":"","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ GARDNERS","offer_id":51621964742929,"sku":"NGR9781911736189","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"US \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52495892775185,"sku":"NIN9781911736189","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/1911736183.jpg?v=1756101467"},{"product_id":"emotional-growth-and-learning-book-paul-greenhalgh-9781138169890","title":"Emotional Growth and Learning","description":"When working with children, an understanding of the social interactions and relationships which influence emotional growth and learning is essential.
