This first volume starts in the last full year of the post war Labour government, follows his rise through the Churchill and Eden governments via a succession of high offices, and culminates with his becoming Prime Minister in 1957. He was an acute observer of events and people not just in his own country or party, but on the wider international and political scene. His Diary provides wry portraits of many of the leading political figures of the period and records his personal take on the great issues and events of the day. In the process Macmillan's wider activities and inner concerns are also revealed, casting light beyond the famously 'unflappable' exterior onto the character of one of the most enigmatic figures in modern British political history.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":49511995212049,"sku":"GOR000866791","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"US \/ WELL_READ \/ SBYB","offer_id":50349396754705,"sku":"CIN0330488686A","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"US \/ GOOD \/ SBYB","offer_id":50349399277841,"sku":"CIN0330488686G","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":53215029395729,"sku":"GOR001813714","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/0330488686.jpg?v=1750877289"},{"product_id":"understanding-post-war-british-society-book-peter-catterall-9780415109406","title":"Understanding Post-War British Society","description":"Brings together the perspectives of leading sociologists and social historians to understand the shaping of British society. It records not only Macmillan's political preoccupations, such as the process of European integration, Anglo-American relations, conflict in the Middle East or the problems of the Cold War, but also provides wry pen portraits of many of the leading European and American figures of the period. Macmillan was an acute observer of events and people not just in his own country or party, but on the wider international and political scene. He describes with ironic amusement the diplomatic confrontations with the Russians, casts a connoisseur's eye over great parliamentary occasions and comments acerbically on the infighting of the Labour Opposition. In the process the diary also reveals aspects of Macmillan's wider activities and inner concerns, his anxieties, his views on his role and what he hoped to achieve, casting light beyond the 'unflappable' exterior onto the character of one of the most enigmatic figures in modern British political history.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":49519950659857,"sku":"GOR002061534","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ WELL_READ \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":50527723061521,"sku":"GOR008161864","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":51532403933457,"sku":"GOR002466892","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/033371167X.jpg?v=1751165502"},{"product_id":"reforming-the-constitution-book-peter-catterall-9780714681078","title":"Reforming the Constitution","description":"This collection takes as its subject how and why the British constitution developed during the course of the 20th century. In chapters that analyse in detail the evolution of various aspects of the constitution, this work explores debates about how the constitution ought to operate and the political goods it ought to secure among politicians, jurists and academics. In addition, it looks at the influence of political parties, nationalism, social and economic change, European integration, and the contests in over particular reforms in Parliament, courts, media and on the hustings.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":49533540237585,"sku":"GOR009634625","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52132886413585,"sku":"NLS9780714681078","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/0714681075.jpg?v=1750700489"},{"product_id":"northern-ireland-in-british-politics-since-1922-book-peter-catterall-9780333638668","title":"The Northern Ireland in British Politics Since 1922","description":"Whilst there are any number of books on the subject of Northern Ireland, few provide much guidance on how it has been handled by Westminster and Whitehall, or indeed the extent to which British governments and Parliament has tried to avoid having to handle the issue. This book provides a much needed historical context in which to assess contemporary approaches to the Northern Ireland problem and, in essays covering the period from the establishment of the Northern Ireland state to the present day, points to many often overlooked continuities in British policy.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":49547179622673,"sku":"GOR013380341","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/0333638662.jpg?v=1750813908"},{"product_id":"contemporary-britain-book-peter-catterall-9780631184942","title":"Contemporary Britain","description":"This review contains 41 survey essays covering different aspects of contemporary developments, policy and personnel. Building into a set of yearbooks, \"Contemporary Britain\" will become a useful tool for contemporary historians, researchers and librarians. The changing state of government, politics, the economy and society will be examined, and it will be introduced by a critical evaulation of current developments in recent British history and changes in the world in general. The review will contain 41 survey essays averaging 3,000 words each, covering different aspects of contemporary development. Were the founding fathers of the party nurtured in the chapels of Nonconformity and shaped by their emphases on liberty, conscience and the value of every human being in the eyes of God? How did the Free Churches, traditionally allied to the Liberal Party, react to the growing importance of the Labour Party between the wars? This book addresses these questions at a range of levels: including organisation; rhetoric; policies and ideals; and electoral politics. It is shown that the distinctive religious setting in which Labour emerged indeed helps to explain the differences between it and more Marxist counterparts on the Continent, and that this setting continued to influence Labour approaches towards welfare, nationalisation and industrial relations between the wars. In the process Labour also adopted some of the righteousness of tone of the Free Churches. This setting was, however, changing. Dropping their traditional suspicion of the State, Nonconformists instead increasingly invested it with religious values, helping to turn it through its growing welfare functions into the provider of practical Christianity. This nationalisation of religion continues to shape British attitudes to the welfare state as well as imposing narrowly utilitarian and material tests of relevance upon the churches and other social institutions. The elevation of the State was not, however, intended as an end in itself. What mattered were the social and individual outcomes. Socialism, for those Free Churchmen and women who helped to shape Labour in the early twentieth century, was about improving society as much as systems.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ -","offer_id":51156940751121,"sku":"","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":51156941046033,"sku":"GOR014189568","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52482775154961,"sku":"NLS9781441115898","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/1441115897.jpg?v=1751985726"},{"product_id":"labour-and-the-free-churches-1918-1939-book-peter-catterall-9781350067264","title":"Labour and the Free Churches, 1918-1939","description":"Did the Labour Party, in Morgan Phillips’ famous phrase, owe ‘more to Methodism than Marx’?
