The Saxon cathedral, much enlarged over the years, burnt down in 1067. Its replacement suffered a similar fate in 1174, to be rebuilt again. As a result, the modern visitor is presented with a confusing historical patchwork which needs some explanation. Eadmer the singer was an eyewitness to the demolition of the Anglo-Saxon cathedral and the construction of the new one by Archbishop Lanfranc. He also describes the building of Conrad's 'glorious choir' at the time of Archbishop Anselm. Gervase of Canterbury likewise describes the destruction of Lanfranc's church by fire in 1174 and the rebuilding by William of Sens and English William. Professor Willis connects these and other sources, such as William of Malmesbury and Matthew Paris, to his own acute observations, creating a vivid impression of the Saxon, Norman and later cathedral. The text is interspersed with many superb wood engravings which, in many cases, offer a clarity which is hard to achieve with photography. Robert Willis (1800-1875) was Jacksonian Professor of natural and experimental philosophy at the University of Cambridge and lecturer in applied mechanics at the Metropolitan School of Science, Jermyn Street, London. He brought a new scientific rigour (but also an artistic eye) to the fields of archaeology and architectural history.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":50190549680401,"sku":"GOR003596665","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"US \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":51054154678545,"sku":"NIN9781904799047","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52333378699537,"sku":"NLS9781904799047","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/1904799043.jpg?v=1751348036"},{"product_id":"architectural-history-of-glastonbury-abbey-book-robert-willis-9780947992446","title":"The Architectural History of Glastonbury Abbey","description":null,"brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ -","offer_id":50648530223377,"sku":"","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":50648530911505,"sku":"GOR005725664","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/0947992448.jpg?v=1750916082"},{"product_id":"selections-from-the-architectural-history-of-the-university-of-cambridge-book-robert-willis-9780521147156","title":"Selections from The Architectural History of the University of Cambridge","description":"Hailed as 'one of the most important contributions to the social and intellectual history of England which has ever been made by a Cambridge man', Robert Willis' monumental architectural history of the University of Cambridge is here reprinted. But Willis's interests also included Italian Gothic architecture, and his observations on the style, amassed in 1832 3 while travelling in France, Italy and Germany, were presented in this book, first published in 1835. The work is a pioneering study of Italian Gothic, a mode overlooked by his contemporaries, and key examples are brought together. It places Italian Gothic architecture within a European context and argues that the style represents an evolutionary assemblage of architectural motifs from different places and earlier periods. Willis's narrative refocused attention on Italian Gothic, winning the approval of the Institution of British Architects, which made him an honorary member in the year of its publication.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ -","offer_id":51019331535121,"sku":"","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"US \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":51019333533969,"sku":"NIN9781108051774","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52591078801681,"sku":"NLS9781108051774","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/1108051774.jpg?v=1751367013"},{"product_id":"architectural-history-of-the-university-of-cambridge-and-of-the-colleges-of-camb-book-robert-willis-9780521358491","title":"The Architectural History of the University of Cambridge and of the Colleges of Cambridge and Eton","description":"Robert Willis's monumental architectural history of the University of Cambridge, first published in 1886 in a revised and extended edition by his nephew J. In this 1845 work, the Reverend Robert Willis, who was Jacksonian Professor of the University of Cambridge, reproduces historical accounts of the destruction and rebuilding of the cathedral, for example by the monk and chronicler Gervase of Canterbury on the disastrous fire in 1174. He connects these sources to his own informed opinions and interpretations of the historical documents, and includes many illustrative wood engravings to aid the discussion. W. Clark, was hailed as 'one of the most important contributors to the social and intellectual history of England which has ever been made by a Cambridge man'. The three illustrated text volumes are now reprinted for the first time, in their entirety, with new introductory material in Volume 1 by David Watkin. Although 'Willis and Clark' has always been recognised by architectural historians as one of the greatest studies of the buildings of a single historic city, its wider importance and status have been recognised only more recently by those interested generally in the conservation of buildings and in the historic development of architectural style and taste. Its unique collection of over three hundred plans, antique and specially commissioned engravings is alone sufficient to make this the one indispensable work of reference on Cambridge architecture before the onset of the modern age.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":51317288698129,"sku":"GOR010864251","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":51436922536209,"sku":"GOR011402656","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/0521358485.jpg?v=1751293768"},{"product_id":"architectural-history-of-the-university-of-cambridge-v1-book-robert-willis-9781430456674","title":"The Architectural History Of The University Of Cambridge V1","description":null,"brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ -","offer_id":51644287320337,"sku":"","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"US \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":51644287516945,"sku":"NIN9781430456674","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/1430456671.jpg?v=1750794305"},{"product_id":"environmental-systems-engineering-and-economics-book-robert-willis-9781461350972","title":"Environmental Systems Engineering and Economics","description":"Environmental Systems Engineering and Economics emphasizes the application of optimization, economics, and systems engineering to problems in environmental resources management.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52089087361297,"sku":"NLS9781461350972","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9781461350972.jpg?v=1756905690"},{"product_id":"environmental-systems-engineering-and-economics-book-robert-willis-9781402076695","title":"Environmental Systems Engineering and Economics","description":"Environmental Systems Engineering and Economics emphasizes the application of optimization, economics, and systems engineering to problems in environmental resources management. This senior level\/graduate textbook introduces optimization theory and algorithms that have been successful in resolving water quality and groundwater management problems. Both linear programming and nonlinear optimization are presented. Multiobjective optimization and the linked simulation-optimization (LSO) methodology are also introduced. The basic principles of economics and engineering economics are also discussed to provide a framework for economic decision making. This text contains numerous example problems. Case studies are presented that address water resources management issues in the north China plain, the control of saltwater intrusion in Jakarta, Indonesia, and groundwater resources management in the Yun Lin basin, Taiwan.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52146227282193,"sku":"NLS9781402076695","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9781402076695.jpg?v=1757597037"},{"product_id":"attempt-to-analyse-the-automaton-chess-player-of-mr-de-kempelen-to-which-is-adde-book-robert-willis-9789356089570","title":"An Attempt to Analyse the Automaton Chess Player of Mr. De Kempelen; To Which is Added, a Copious Collection of the Knight's Moves over the Chess Board","description":null,"brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52403956285713,"sku":"NLS9789356089570","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"US \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":53473039876369,"sku":"NIN9789356089570","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9789356089570.jpg?v=1758762874"},{"product_id":"principles-of-mechanism-book-robert-willis-9781108023092","title":"Principles of Mechanism","description":"Robert Willis (1800-1875) was a scientist, inventor and architectural historian of international repute. As Jacksonian Professor of Natural and Experimental Philosophy at Cambridge, he demonstrated specially made mechanical devices to huge audiences. First published in 1841, Principles of Mechanism provided the theory behind the demonstrations. He defined mechanism as the means by which any relations of motion could be realised. The book was extremely influential, with all books in English, French, and German on the subject for the next generation adopting Willis' classification and nomenclature. He worked closely with William Whewell, whose Mechanics of Engineering was published in the same year. These two books established the science of mechanism, and provided study materials for the rapidly growing engineering profession. The work became a standard textbook for engineering and mathematics students, with a second edition issued in 1870.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":52454846660881,"sku":null,"price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52454847250705,"sku":"NLS9781108023092","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9781108023092.jpg?v=1759372423"},{"product_id":"barlow-and-other-stories-book-robert-willis-9781524604936","title":"Barlow and Other Stories","description":"Barlow Jimson was mean before he went deaf. His plan didn't include falling in love with her, which happens along the broader oad to satisfying his sense of justice. Clay Redmond concocts an elaborate scheme that takes him to the heart of Fidel Castro's Cuba. The intrigue expands further to Santo Domingo and, with the help of two Cuban friends, he conspires with a powerful Spaniard who maintains a thriving drug empire in the Andes Mountains of South America.
