Paradoxes threaten our basic understanding of central concepts such as space,  time, motion, infinity, truth, knowledge, and belief.  In this volume Roy  T Cook provides a sophisticated, yet accessible and entertaining, introduction  to the study of paradoxes, one that includes a detailed examination of a wide  variety of paradoxes. The book is organized around four important types of  paradox: the semantic paradoxes involving truth, the set-theoretic paradoxes  involving arbitrary collections of objects, the Soritical paradoxes involving  vague concepts, and the epistemic paradoxes involving knowledge and belief. In  each of these cases, Cook frames the discussion in terms of four different  approaches one might take towards solving such paradoxes. Each chapter concludes  with a number of exercises that illustrate the philosophical arguments and  logical concepts involved in the paradoxes.  Paradoxes is the  ideal introduction to the topic and will be a valuable resource for scholars and  students in a wide variety of disciplines who wish to understand the important  role that paradoxes have played, and continue to play, in contemporary  philosophy.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"US \/ VERY_GOOD \/ SBYB","offer_id":50362428850449,"sku":"CIN0745649440VG","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/0745649440.jpg?v=1751042535"},{"product_id":"dictionary-of-philosophical-logic-book-roy-t-cook-9780748625598","title":"A Dictionary of Philosophical Logic","description":"This dictionary introduces undergraduate and post-graduate students in philosophy, mathematics, and computer science to the main problems and positions in philosophical logic. Coverage includes not only key figures, positions, terminology, and debates within philosophical logic itself, but issues in related, overlapping disciplines such as set theory and the philosophy of mathematics as well. Entries are extensively cross-referenced, so that each entry can be easily located within the context of wider debates, thereby providing a valuable reference both for tracking the connections between concepts within logic and for examining the manner in which these concepts are applied in other philosophical disciplines.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ -","offer_id":50697245524241,"sku":"","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ GARDNERS","offer_id":50697247555857,"sku":"NGR9780748625598","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":51564655837457,"sku":"GOR014330355","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"US \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":53035250057489,"sku":"NIN9780748625598","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/0748625593.jpg?v=1768560039"},{"product_id":"yablo-paradox-book-roy-t-cook-9780199669608","title":"The Yablo Paradox","description":"Roy T Cook examines the Yablo paradox--a paradoxical, infinite sequence of sentences, each of which entails the falsity of all others later than it in the sequence--with special attention paid to the idea that this paradox provides us with a semantic paradox that involves no circularity.  The three main chapters of the book focus, respectively, on three questions that can be (and have been) asked about the Yablo construction. First we have the Characterization Problem, which asks what patterns of sentential reference (circular or not) generate semantic paradoxes. Addressing this problem requires an interesting and fruitful detour through the theory of directed graphs, allowing us to draw interesting connections between philosophical problems and purely mathematical ones. Next is the Circularity Question, which addresses whether or not the Yablo paradox is genuinely non-circular. Answering this question is complicated: although the original formulation of the Yablo paradox is circular, it turns out that it is not circular in any sense that can bear the blame for the paradox. Further, formulations of the paradox using infinitary conjunction provide genuinely non-circular constructions. Finally, Cook turns his attention to the Generalizability Question: can the Yabloesque pattern be used to generate genuinely non-circular variants of other paradoxes, such as epistemic and set-theoretic paradoxes? Cook argues that although there are general constructions-unwindings--that transform circular constructions into Yablo-like sequences, it turns out that these sorts of constructions are not 'well-behaved' when transferred from semantic puzzles to puzzles of other sorts. He concludes with a short discussion of the connections between the Yablo paradox and the Curry paradox.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":52332808306961,"sku":null,"price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52332808634641,"sku":"NLS9780199669608","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9780199669608.jpg?v=1758152756"},{"product_id":"arche-papers-on-the-mathematics-of-abstraction-book-roy-t-cook-9789048170906","title":"The Arché Papers on the Mathematics of Abstraction","description":"InSeptember2000theArchéCentrelauncheda ve-yearresearchprojecten- tled the Logical and Metaphysical Foundations of Classical Mathematics. Its goal was to study the prospects, philosophical and technical, for abstractionist foundations for the classical mathematical theories of the natural, real and complex numbers and standard set theory. Funding was provided by the then Arts and Humanities Research Board (now the Arts and Humanities Research Council) for the appointment of full-time postdoctoral research fellows and PhD students to collaborate with more senior colleagues in the project, and at the same time the British Academy awarded the Centre additional resources to establish an International Network of scholars to be associated with the work. This was the beginning of the serial ‘Abstraction workshops’ of which the Centre had staged no less than eleven by December 2006. We gra- fully acknowledge the generous support of the Academy and Council, sine qua non. The project seminars and Network meetings generated—and continue to generate—a large number of leading-edge research papers on all aspects of the project agenda. The present volume is the rst of what we hope will be a number of anthologies of these researches. With two exceptions,—the contribution by the late George Boolos and the co-authored paper by Gabriel Uzquiano and Ignacio Jané,—the papers that Roy Cook has collected in the present volume are all authored by sometime members of the project team or of the British Academy Network.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52340174848273,"sku":"NLS9789048170906","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"US \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52932532044049,"sku":"NIN9789048170906","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9789048170906.jpg?v=1758170518"},{"product_id":"arche-papers-on-the-mathematics-of-abstraction-book-roy-t-cook-9781402042645","title":"The Arche Papers on the Mathematics of Abstraction","description":"This volume collects together a number of important papers concerning both the method of abstraction generally and the use of particular abstraction principles to reconstruct central areas of mathematics along logicist lines.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52584012349713,"sku":"NLS9781402042645","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"US \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52748606603537,"sku":"NIN9781402042645","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9781402042645.jpg?v=1761048749"}],"url":"https:\/\/www.worldofbooks.com\/en-au\/collections\/author-books-by-roy-t-cook.oembed","provider":"World of Books ","version":"1.0","type":"link"}
