Peter McLaren, named Outstanding Educator in America by the Association of Educators of Latin America and the Caribbean in 2013 and winner of numerous awards for his scholarship and international political activism, has penned another classic work with Pedagogy of Insurrection. One of the educators that Ana Maria (Nita) Araújo Freire credits as an architect of what has come to be known worldwide as critical pedagogy, and who Paulo Freire named his ‘intellectual cousin,’ McLaren has consistently produced iconoclastic work that has been heralded by educators worldwide as among some of the most significant commentary on the state of education. In Philosophy and Critical Pedagogy: Insurrection and Commonwealth, Marcuse’s hitherto misunderstood and neglected philosophy of labor is reconsidered, resulting in a labor theory of ethics. This develops commonwealth criteria of judgment regarding the real and enduring economic and political possibilities that concretely encompass all of our engagement and action.  Marcuse’s newly discovered 1974 Paris Lectures are examined and the theories of Georg Lukács and Ernest Manheim contextualize the analysis to permit a critical assessment of the nature of dialectical methodology today. It provides an exposition and critical analysis of the ideas contained in his writings, ideas that emerged from his experiences in two Tuscan localities. The work of Milani and the School of Barbiana that he directed provide signposts for a critically and sociologically engaged pedagogy. Important themes include education and class politics; education and imperialism; education and the culture of militarization; the collective dimensions of learning and writing; peer tutoring; critical media literacy; and reading history against the grain. These ideas are analyzed with reference to similar and contrasting ideas by other international educators, scholars and thinkers. As the book argues, Milani's oeuvre contains important ingredients for a social justice-oriented critical pedagogy. The spirit for this pedagogical approach is captured in the School of Barbiana's motto 'I care.'","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52135829078289,"sku":"NLS9781433121524","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9781433121524.jpg?v=1757551111"},{"product_id":"conscientization-and-the-cultivation-of-conscience-book-keqi-liu-9781433125423","title":"Conscientization and the Cultivation of Conscience","description":"Conscientization and the Cultivation of Conscience constitutes a major contribution to the international literature on the work of Paulo Freire, one of the most influential educationalists of all time. It is argued that practitioners and policy makers open genuine spaces for educational endeavours that value children’s dignity, understand resistant behaviour as a form of communication, and focus on transformative resistance as a praxis of citizenship.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":52342048850193,"sku":null,"price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52342049440017,"sku":"NLS9781433168437","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9781433168437.jpg?v=1758172341"},{"product_id":"curriculum-studies-in-the-age-of-covid-19-book-peter-mclaren-9781433196980","title":"Curriculum Studies in the Age of Covid-19","description":"Curriculum Studies in the Age of Covid-19 engages unbearable story-telling in order to document, give testimony to, and attempt to understand the psycho-social and socio-political dimensions of living through the unfolding pandemic, particularly in the context of education.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52350862098705,"sku":"NLS9781433196980","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9781433196980.jpg?v=1758180551"},{"product_id":"curriculum-studies-in-the-age-of-covid-19-book-marla-morris-9781433197468","title":"Curriculum Studies in the Age of Covid-19","description":"Curriculum Studies in the Age of Covid-19 engages unbearable story-telling in order to document, give testimony to, and attempt to understand the psycho-social and socio-political dimensions of living through the unfolding pandemic, particularly in the context of education.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":52351062606097,"sku":null,"price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52351063982353,"sku":"NLS9781433197468","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9781433197468.jpg?v=1758180708"},{"product_id":"radical-imagine-nation-book-peter-mclaren-9781433143793","title":"Radical Imagine-Nation","description":"This collection of essays, poems, and reflections by scholars, public intellectuals, artists, and community activists (as well as those whose work intersects with all of these categories) constitutes a landmark achievement in critical pedagogy and social justice education. It accomplishes this exploration by looking at the history of Raza communities, defined broadly as the Indigenous and mestizo working class peoples from Latin America, with a focus on the complex yet unifying Chicanx-Mexican experience in the Southwest United States. This book bridges the fields of history, pedagogy, and decolonization through a creative and interweaving methodology that includes critical historiography, dialogue, autoethnography, and qualitative inquiry. Collectively, this work opens new ground, challenging scholars and educators to rethink critical education rooted in traditional and Western frameworks. Arguing for decolonial and Indigenous approaches, the author invites educators and cultural workers to reflect on learning and community in their praxis. Raza Struggle and the Movement for Ethnic Studies will be of interest to students of ethnic studies and Latin American and Mexican history. It is also relevant to teachers, teacher educators, and scholars who are intent on creating spaces of hope and possibility rooted in Freirean, decolonial, and Indigenous frameworks.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":52407628300561,"sku":null,"price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52407629021457,"sku":"NLS9781433147388","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9781433147388.jpg?v=1758772597"},{"product_id":"carlos-bulosan-revolutionary-filipino-writer-in-the-united-states-book-e-san-juan-jr-9781433142444","title":"Carlos Bulosan-Revolutionary Filipino Writer in the United States","description":"Carlos Bulosan-Revolutionary Filipino Writer in the United States attempts an in-depth critical evaluation of the major works in the context of the sociopolitical changes that configured the writer's sensibility during the Depression, the united-front mobilization prior to World War II, and the Cold War witch-hunting of the fifties.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":52409953648913,"sku":null,"price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52409954369809,"sku":"NLS9781433142444","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9781433142444.jpg?v=1758776478"},{"product_id":"asian-american-scholars-of-education-book-nicholas-d-hartlep-9781433186790","title":"Asian\/American Scholars of Education","description":"This second edition of Asian\/American Scholars of Education: 21st Century Pedagogies, Perspectives, and Experiences shares an updated number of Asian\/American luminaries in the field of education. This book explores how the development of one’s identity as an activist educator is a long and complex social, political, and cultural process involving many causal elements.  The MST, one of the largest social movements in contemporary Latin America and one of the most successful grassroots movements in the world, has struggled for agrarian reform as well as social and economic justice in Brazil, achieving impressive results. Its members include people from some of the poorest segments of Brazilian society. This book presents a powerful analysis of their incredible life stories (testimonios), collected through semi-structured interviews with women educators, seeking to uncover the main elements that account for the development of their identities as activist educators. Finally, the book addresses the implications of its research findings for social justice teacher education.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52684035195153,"sku":"NLS9781433120909","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9781433120909.jpg?v=1762322080"},{"product_id":"lorenzo-milani-the-school-of-barbiana-and-the-struggle-for-social-justice-book-federico-batini-9781433121531","title":"Lorenzo Milani, The School of Barbiana and the Struggle for Social Justice","description":"This book sheds light on the work of one of the 20thcentury's foremost critical educators, the Italian Lorenzo Milani (1923-1967), on the 90thanniversary of his birth. It provides an exposition and critical analysis of the ideas contained in his writings, ideas that emerged from his experiences in two Tuscan localities. The work of Milani and the School of Barbiana that he directed provide signposts for a critically and sociologically engaged pedagogy. Important themes include education and class politics; education and imperialism; education and the culture of militarization; the collective dimensions of learning and writing; peer tutoring; critical media literacy; and reading history against the grain. These ideas are analyzed with reference to similar and contrasting ideas by other international educators, scholars and thinkers. As the book argues, Milani's oeuvre contains important ingredients for a social justice-oriented critical pedagogy. The spirit for this pedagogical approach is captured in the School of Barbiana's motto 'I care.'","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52685572014353,"sku":"NLS9781433121531","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9781433121531.jpg?v=1762325916"},{"product_id":"asian-american-scholars-of-education-book-nicholas-hartlep-9781433149467","title":"Asian\/American Scholars of Education","description":"Asian\/American Scholars of Education: 21st Century Pedagogies, Perspectives, and Experiences shares the knowledge and travails of Asian\/American luminaries in the field of education. For radicals, the most pressing question is: How can we transform ourselves and our world into something else, something just? In Marx, Capital, and Education, Curry Stephenson Malott and Derek R. Ford develop a «critical pedagogy of becoming» that is concerned with precisely this question. The authors boldly investigate the movement toward communism and the essential role that critical pedagogy can play in this transition. Performing a novel and educational reading of Karl Marx and radical theorists and activists, Malott and Ford present a critical understanding of the past and present, of the underlying logics and (often opaque) forces that determine the world-historical moment. Yet Malott and Ford are equally concerned with examining the specific ways in which we can teach, learn, study, and struggle ourselves beyond capitalism; how we can ultimately overthrow the existing order and institute a new mode of production and set of social relations. This incisive and timely book, penned by two militant teachers, organizers, and academics, reconfigures pedagogy and politics. Educators and organizers alike will find that it provides new ammunition in the struggle for the world that we deserve.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52820678541585,"sku":"NLS9781433131127","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9781433131127.jpg?v=1764330414"}],"url":"https:\/\/www.worldofbooks.com\/en-au\/collections\/education-and-struggle-book-series.oembed","provider":"World of Books ","version":"1.0","type":"link"}
