As technologies advance, the amount of information and knowledge that engineers have to deal with is constantly increasing. This results in seeking more advanced computer technology to achieve higher functionalities, flexibility, and efficient performance of the CAD systems. Knowledge engineering, or more broadly artificial intelligence, is considered a primary candidate technology to build a new generation of CAD systems. Since design is a very intellectual human activity, this approach seems to make sense. The ideas of intelligent CAD systems (ICAD) are now increasingly discussed everywhere. We can observe many conferences and workshops reporting a number of research efforts on this particular subject. Researchers are coming from computer science, artificial intelligence, mechanical engineering, electronic engineering, civil engineering, architectural science, control engineering, etc. But, still we cannot see the direction of this concept, or at least, there is no widely accepted concept of ICAD. What can designers expect from these future generation CAD systems? In which direction must developers proceed? The situation is somewhat confusing.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52089497846033,"sku":"NLS9783642729478","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9783642729478.jpg?v=1786615083"},{"product_id":"advances-in-object-oriented-graphics-i-book-edwin-h-blake-9783642763052","title":"Advances in Object-Oriented Graphics I","description":"Object-oriented systems have gained a great deal of popularity recently and their application to graphics has been very successful. This book documents a number of recent advances and indicates numerous areas of current research. The purpose of the book is: - to demonstrate the extraordinary practical utility of object-oriented methods in computer graphics (including user interfaces, image synthesis, CAD), - to examine outstanding research issues in the field of object-oriented graphics, and in particular to investi- gate extensions and shortcomings of the methodology when applied to computer graphics. Papers included in the book extend existing object-oriented graphical techniques, such as Smalltalk's model view controller or constraints, introduce the use of complex and persistent objects in graphics, and give approaches to direct manipulation interfaces. The reader is presented with an in-depth treatment of a number of significant existing graphics systems, both for user interfaces and for image synthesis. There are theoretical surveys and chapters pointing to new directions in the broad field of computer graphics. Computer language scientists will find a useful critique of object-oriented language constructs and suggested ways to extend object-oriented theory.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52089504694545,"sku":"NLS9783642763052","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9783642763052.jpg?v=1786791261"},{"product_id":"advances-in-computer-graphics-hardware-i-book-wolfgang-straer-9783540182221","title":"Advances in Computer Graphics Hardware I","description":"The material presented in this book originates from the first Eurographics Workshop on Graphics Hardware, held in Lisbon, Portugal, in August 1986. The main impetus for the Workshop came from the Alvey Programme's Man- Machine Interface Director who was concerned at the lack of a formal definition of window management and the lack of focus for research activities in this area. Win- dow Management per se is not the complete problem in understanding interaction. However, the appearance of bitmap displays from a variety of vendors enabling an operator to work simultaneously with a number of applications on a single display has focussed attention on what the overall architecture for such a system should be and also on what the interfaces to both the application and operator should be. The format of the Workshop was to spend the first day with presentations from a number of invited speakers. The aim was to get the participants aware of the current state of the art and to highlight the main outstanding issues. The second day consisted of the Workshop participants splitting into three groups and discussing specific issues in depth. Plenary sessions helped to keep the individual groups work- ing on similar lines. The third day concentrated on the individual groups presenting their results and interacting with the other groups to identify main areas of con- sensus and also a framework for future work.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52144105652497,"sku":"NLS9783642709210","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9783642709210.jpg?v=1786441592"},{"product_id":"computer-graphics-and-mathematics-book-bianca-falcidieno-9783642775888","title":"Computer Graphics and Mathematics","description":"Since its very existence as a separate field within computer science, computer graphics had to make extensive use of non-trivial mathematics, for example, projective geometry, solid modelling, and approximation theory. A wide range of pa- pers were selected in order to cover most of the topics of interest for the members of the group, for this first edition, and 26 of them were presented in two days. Subsequently 18 papers were selected for this volume. 1'he presentations were organized in eight small sessions, in addition to discussions in small subgroups. The first two sessions were dedicated to the specific needs for visualization in computational sciences: the need for graphics support in large computing centres and high performance net- works, needs of research and education in universities and academic cen- tres, and the need for effective and efficient ways of integrating numerical computations or experimental data and graphics. Three of those papers are in Part I of this book. The six contributions cover various disciplines in Computer Graphics, giving either an in-depth view of a specific topic or an updated overview of a large area. Chapter 1, Object-oriented Computer Graphics, introduces the concepts of object ori- ented programming and shows how they can be applied in different fields of Computer Graphics, such as modelling, animation and user interface design. Finally, it provides an extensive bibliography for those who want to know more about this fast growing subject. Chapter 2, Projective Geometry and Computer Graphics, is a detailed presentation of the mathematics of projective geometry, which serves as the mathematical background for all graphic packages, including GKS, GKS-3D and PRIGS. This useful paper gives in a single document information formerly scattered throughout the literature and can be used as a reference for those who have to implement graphics and CAD systems. Chapter 3, GKS-3D and PHIGS: Theory and Practice, describes both standards for 3D graphics, and shows how each of them is better adapted in different typical applications. It provides answers to those who have to choose a basic 3D graphics library for their developments, or to people who have to define their future policy for graphics.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":52348713926929,"sku":null,"price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52348714778897,"sku":"NLS9783642840623","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9783642840623.jpg?v=1786614913"},{"product_id":"object-oriented-programming-for-graphics-book-chris-laffra-9783642791949","title":"Object-Oriented Programming for Graphics","description":"Object-oriented concepts are particularly applicable to computer graphics in its broadest sense, including interaction, image synthesis, animation, and computer-aided design. The workshop theme was Practical Experience and Evaluation. It included five paper presentation sessions, each followed by a discussion. The workshop closed with a general discussion. The book is therefore divided into five parts: design process, system architecture, languages, geometric reasoning, and user interface. A report on the discussion session, written by the session's moderator, concludes each part. These reports are not intended to be exact records of the discussion, but rather the moderators' summary of their contents. The aim of the workshop was to share the experience the participants gained by developing intelligent CAD (Computer Aided Design) systems, and to evaluate the developed systems to determine which features were still lacking. The workshop was organized as the last one in a series of three workshops under the same title. The first workshop focused on theoretical and methodological aspects, resulting in a sound theoretical basis for intelligent CAD systems. Implementational issues were discussed at the second workshop, paying attention to systems developed with reference to this basis. The experience and evaluation showed a dual outcome. Firstly, it resulted in the development of a new generation of intelligent CAD systems. Secondly, it led us to the development of new theories for intelligent CAD.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":52351823380753,"sku":null,"price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52351823937809,"sku":"NLS9783642843945","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9783642843945.jpg?v=1758181346"},{"product_id":"from-object-modelling-to-advanced-visual-communication-book-sabine-coquillart-9783642782930","title":"From Object Modelling to Advanced Visual Communication","description":"This book is a collection of the best papers originally presented as state-of-the-art reports or tutorials at the EUROGRAPHICS'91 conference in Vienna. After more than 20 years of research, rendering remains an partially unsolved, interesting, and challenging topic. This year 71 ( ) papers have been submitted from Europe, North America, and Asia. The average quality in terms of technical merit was impressive, showing that substantial work is achieved on this topic from several groups around the world. In general we all gained the impression that in the mean time the technical quality of the contributions is comparable to that of a specialised high-end, full- scale conference. All papers have been reviewed from at least three members of the program committee. In addition, several colleagues helped us in managing the reviewing process in time either by supporting additional reviews, or by assisting the members of the committee. We have been very happy to welcome eminent invited speakers. Holly Rush- meier is internationally well known for her excellent work in all areas of rendering and gave us a review of modelling and rendering participating media with em- phasis on scientific visualization. In addition, Peter Shirley presented a survey about future rends in rendering techniques.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":52355341123857,"sku":null,"price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52355341779217,"sku":"NLS9783642878275","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9783642878275.jpg?v=1758184889"},{"product_id":"data-structures-for-raster-graphics-book-laurens-ra-kessener-9783642710735","title":"Data Structures for Raster Graphics","description":"Raster graphics differs from the more traditional vector or line graphics in the sense that images are not made up from line segments but from discrete elements orderly arranged in a two-dimensional rectangular region. There are two reasons for the growing popularity of raster graphics or bit-mapped displays: I) the possibilities they offer to show extremely realistic pictures 2) the dropping prices of those displays and associated processors and memories. With the rise of raster graphics, all kinds of new techniques, methods, algorithms and data representations are associated -such as ray tracing, raster operations, and quadtrees-bringing with them a lot of fruitful research. As stated above raster graphics allows to create extremely realistic (synthesized) pictures. There are important applications in such diverse areas as industrial deSign, flight Simulation, education, image processing and animation. Unfortunately many applications are hampered by the fact that with the present state of the art they reqUire an excessive amount of computing resources. Hence it is worthwhile to investigate methods and techniques which may be of help in redudng computer costs associated with raster graphics applications. Since the choice of data srtuc- tures influences the efficiency of algorithms in a crudal way, a workshop was set up in order to bring together a (limited) number of experienced researchers to dis- cuss this topic. The main impetus for the workshop came from the Graphics and Interaction in ESPRIT Technical Interest Group of the European Community ESPRIT Programme. The Graphics and Interac- tion in ESPRIT Technical Interest Group arose from a meeting of researchers held in Brussels in May 1988, which identified a number of technical areas of common interest across a significant number of ESPRIT I and ESPRIT I projects. It was recognized that there was a need to share information on such activities between projects, to disseminate results from the projects to the world at large, and for projects to be aware of related activities elsewhere in the world. The need for a Technical Interest Group was confirmed at a meeting held during ESPRIT Technical Week in November 1989, attended by over 50 representatives from ESPRIT projects and the Commission of the European Communities. Information exchange sessions were organized during the EUROGRAPHICS '89 confer- ence, with the intention of disseminating information from ESPRIT projects to the wider research and development community, both in Europe and beyond.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52355981312273,"sku":"NLS9783642762857","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9783642762857.jpg?v=1786443892"},{"product_id":"intelligent-cad-systems-ii-book-varol-akman-9783540509141","title":"Intelligent CAD Systems II","description":"Records of the 2nd Eurographics Workshop on Intelligent CAD Systems, Held on April 19-23, 1988, at Konigshof Congress Centre, Veldhoven, the Netherlands","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":52425802613009,"sku":null,"price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52425803038993,"sku":"NLS9783540509141","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9783540509141.jpg?v=1759155857"},{"product_id":"advances-in-computer-graphics-hardware-iii-book-aam-kuijk-9783540534884","title":"Advances in Computer Graphics Hardware III","description":"The third part addresses parallel systems: massively parallel object-based architectures, two systems in which image generated by individual rendering systems are composited, a transputer-based parallel display processor.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":52425825845521,"sku":null,"price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52425826337041,"sku":"NLS9783540534884","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9783540534884.jpg?v=1759155917"},{"product_id":"rendering-visualization-and-rasterization-hardware-book-arie-kaufman-9783540567875","title":"Rendering, Visualization and Rasterization Hardware","description":"The latest developments in rendering, visualization, and rasterization hardware are reported in this volume, which contains revised versions of thecontributions to the Sixth Eurographics Workshop on Graphics Hardware, held in Vienna in September 1991 in conjunction with the Eurographics '91 Conference. New techniques in hardware and software developments, e. g., new rendering methods, have led to new ap- plications and broader acceptance of graphics in fields such as scientific visualization, multi-media applications, computer aided design, and virtual reality systems. The evolving functionality and the growing complexity of graphics algorithms and sys- tems make it more difficult for the application programmer to take full advantage of these systems. Conventional programming methods are no longer suited to manage the increasing complexity, so new programming paradigms and system architectures are re- quired. One important step in this direction is the introduction and use of object-oriented methods. Intuition teils us that visible graphical entities are objects, and experience has indeed shown that object-oriented software techniques are quite useful for graphics. The expressiveness of object-oriented languages compared to pure procedurallanguages gives the graphics application programmer much better support when transforming his mental intentions into computer code. Moreover, object-oriented software development is a, weil founded technology, allowing software to be built from reusable and extensible compo- nents. The first book in the series contains the Tutorial Notes of the EUROGRAPHICS '83 conference, held in Zagreb, Yugoslavia, in September 1983. It covers four major aspects of computer graphics today: - The first part contains a detailed introduction into computer graphics, its concepts, its methods, its tools, and its devices. It gives an easy access for the newcomer to the field and it offers an overview of the state of the art in computer graphics. - The second part is devoted to interactive techniques. This is currently one of the most important fields of research in computer graphics. Important aspects of this research and its current state are reported. After all, if standards are not used, and used effectively, why are we spending all this time and money designing them? The ultimate test of the utility of computer standards is the number of implementations that are developed and the number of end-users that successfully use these within their own application. The number of implementations is related to the quality of a standard because vendors cannot produce correct implementations without clear, precise and unambiguous semantics within the standard. The number of users of implementations of the standards is an even greater measure of success of the standard because users will only purchase these implementations if they are useful for their applications. How could we determine whether or not graphics standards are useful? we asked ourselves. Let's ask both implementors and users about the experiences they've had with our standards. Let them tell us about the successes and the problems as well. Thus, an idea was born - the idea of a series of workshops, each one devoted to the usability of a different computer graphics standard. The only thing left to do in planning this workshop was to choose the appropriate standard to serve as the focus of the first workshop. There were only a few viable candidates.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52650622058769,"sku":"NLS9783642736315","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"US \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52932513759505,"sku":"NIN9783642736315","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9783642736315.jpg?v=1787947281"},{"product_id":"user-interface-management-systems-book-gnther-pfaff-9783642700439","title":"User Interface Management Systems","description":"The book contains the proceedings and reports of the Workshop on User Interface Management Systems, held in Seeheim, Federal Re- public of Germany, November 1-3, 1983. It is made up of the papers presented during a Eurographics workshop that has been held in Rennes (France) on June 1990. Although realism in computer graphics has existed for many years, we have considered that two research directions can now clearly be identified. One makes use of empirical methods to efficiently create images that look real. As opposed to this approach, the other orientation makes use of physics to produce images that are exact representations of the real world (at the expense of additional processing time), hence the term photosimulation which indeed was the subject of this book. The objectives of this workshop were to assemble experts from physics and computer graphics in order to contribute to the introduction of physics-based approaches in the field of computer generated images. The fact that this workshop was the first entirely devoted to this topic was a bet and fortunately it turned out that it was a success. The success of the series is mainly based on the expertise of the contributing authors, who are recognized professionals in their field. Starting out with one of the conference's main topics, the chapter Visualization of Scientific Data gives an overview of methods for displaying scientific results in an easily surveyable and comprehensible form. It presents algorithms and methods utilized to achieve visualization results in a form adequate for humans. User interfaces for such systems are also explored, and practical conclusions are drawn. The chapter Color in Computer Graphics describes the problems of manipulating and matching color in the real world. After some fundamental statements about color models and their relationships, the main emphasis is placed on the problem of objective color specification for computer graphics systems. It is very hard to match colors between devices such as scanners, printers and displays.
