Sparse grids are a popular approach for the numerical treatment of high-dimensional problems. Where classical numerical discretization schemes fail in more than three or four dimensions, sparse grids, in their different guises, are frequently the method of choice, be it spatially adaptive in the hierarchical basis or via the dimensionally adaptive combination technique. Demonstrating once again the importance of this numerical discretization scheme, the selected articles present recent advances on the numerical analysis of sparse grids as well as efficient data structures. The book also discusses a range of applications, including uncertainty quantification and plasma physics.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"US \/ GOOD \/ SBYB","offer_id":50262565224721,"sku":"CIN3319282603G","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52650626646289,"sku":"NLS9783319282602","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/3319282603.jpg?v=1751030754"},{"product_id":"advanced-topics-in-computational-partial-differential-equations-book-hans-petter-langtangen-9783540014386","title":"Advanced Topics in Computational Partial Differential Equations","description":"This book is about solving partial differential equations (PDEs). Such equa tions are used to model a wide range ofphenomena in virtually all fields ofsci ence and technology. Inthe last decade, the general availability of extremely powerful computers has shifted the focus in computational mathematics from simplified model problems to much more sophisticated models resembling in tricate features of real life. This change challenges our knowledge in computer science and in numerical analysis. The main objective ofthe present book is to teach modern,advanced tech niques for numerical PDE solution. The book also introduces several models arising in fields likefinance, medicine, material technology, and geology. Inor der to read this book, you must have a basic knowledge of partial differential equations and numerical methods for solving such equations. Furthermore, some background in finite element methods is required. You do not need to know Diffpack, although this programming environment is used in examples throughout the text. Basically, this book is about models, methods, and how to implement the methods. For the implementation part it is natural for us to use Diffpack as the programming environment, because making a PDE solver in Diffpack requires little amount of programming and because Diff pack has support for the advanced numerical methods treated in this book. Most chapters have a part on models and methods, and a part on imple mentation and Diffpack programming. The exposition is designed such that readers can focus only on the first part, if desired.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":50429267673361,"sku":"GOR002562115","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"US \/ GOOD \/ SBYB","offer_id":50522753761553,"sku":"CIN003025809XG","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"US \/ VERY_GOOD \/ SBYB","offer_id":50761291038993,"sku":"CIN003025809XVG","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52327436812561,"sku":"NLS9783540014386","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/003025809X.jpg?v=1751096350"},{"product_id":"numerical-techniques-for-global-atmospheric-models-book-peter-h-lauritzen-9783642116391","title":"Numerical Techniques for Global Atmospheric Models","description":"This book surveys recent developments in numerical techniques for global atmospheric models. During the last three decades there has been great progress in the theory and practice of solving partial differential equations, and research has extended in various directions. Full-scale nonlinear problems have come within the range of nu- merical simulation. The importance of mathematical modeling and analysis in science and engineering is steadily increasing. In addition, new possibili- ties of analysing the reliability of computations have appeared. Many other developments have occurred: these are only the most noteworthy. This book is the record of the proceedings of the International Sympo- sium on Mathematical Modeling and Numerical Simulation in Continuum Mechanics, held in Yamaguchi, Japan from 29 September to 3 October 2000. The topics covered by the symposium ranged from solids to fluids, and in- cluded both mathematical and computational analysis of phenomena and algorithms. Twenty-one invited talks were delivered at the symposium. This volume includes almost all of them, and expresses aspects of the progress mentioned above. All the papers were individually refereed. We hope that this volume will be a stepping-stone for further developments in this field.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"US \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":51062776168721,"sku":"NIN9783540423997","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52424881013009,"sku":"NLS9783540423997","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/B007RD0L52.jpg?v=1751221352"},{"product_id":"computational-fluid-dynamics-for-sport-simulation-book-martin-peters-9783662519448","title":"Computational Fluid Dynamics for Sport Simulation","description":"All over the world sport plays a prominent role in society: as a leisure activity for many, as an ingredient of culture, as a business and as a matter of national prestige in such major events as the World Cup in soccer or the Olympic Games. Originally developed for computational fluid dynamics applications these methods have propagated to fields as diverse as astrophysics, climate modeling, combustion, biophysics and many others. The underlying physical models and equations used in these disciplines are rather different, yet algorithmic and implementation issues facing practitioners are often remarkably similar. Unfortunately, there has been little effort to review the advances and outstanding issues of adaptive mesh refinement methods across such a variety of fields. This book attempts to bridge this gap. The flow through a channel can be manipulated using various drugs, and the effect of a given drug can be reflected by changing the Markov model. These lecture notes provide an accessible introduction to the mathematical methods needed to deal with these models. They emphasize the use of numerical methods and provide sufficient details for the reader to implement the models and thereby study the effect of various drugs.  Examples in the text include stochastic calcium release from internal storage systems in cells, as well as stochastic models of the transmembrane potential. Well known Markov models are studied and a systematic approach to including the effect of mutations is presented. Lastly, the book shows how to derive the optimal properties of a theoretical model of a drug for a given mutation defined in terms of a Markov model.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52121587745041,"sku":"NLS9783319807089","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9783319807089.jpg?v=1757432431"},{"product_id":"discretization-methods-and-iterative-solvers-based-on-domain-decomposition-book-barbara-i-wohlmuth-9783540410836","title":"Discretization Methods and Iterative Solvers Based on Domain Decomposition","description":"Domain decomposition methods provide powerful and flexible tools for the numerical approximation of partial differential equations arising in the modeling of many interesting applications in science and engineering. This book deals with discretization techniques on non-matching triangulations and iterative solvers with particular emphasis on mortar finite elements, Schwarz methods and multigrid techniques. New results on non-standard situations as mortar methods based on dual basis functions and vector field discretizations are analyzed and illustrated by numerical results. The role of trace theorems, harmonic extensions, dual norms and weak interface conditions is emphasized. Although the original idea was used successfully more than a hundred years ago, these methods are relatively new for the numerical approximation. The possibilites of high performance computations and the interest in large- scale problems have led to an increased research activity.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52121888653585,"sku":"NLS9783540410836","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9783540410836.jpg?v=1757435679"},{"product_id":"advances-in-time-delay-systems-book-silviu-iulian-niculescu-9783540208907","title":"Advances in Time-Delay Systems","description":"In the mathematical description of a physical or biological process, it is a common practice","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52123239907601,"sku":"NLS9783540208907","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9783540208907.jpg?v=1757448170"},{"product_id":"extraction-of-quantifiable-information-from-complex-systems-book-stephan-dahlke-9783319081588","title":"Extraction of Quantifiable Information from Complex Systems","description":"Recent developments in mathematics suggest that, in the long run, much more powerful numerical solution strategies could be derived if the interconnections between the different fields of research were systematically exploited at a conceptual level.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52124289958161,"sku":"NLS9783319081588","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9783319081588.jpg?v=1757456236"},{"product_id":"numerical-methods-for-general-and-structured-eigenvalue-problems-book-daniel-kressner-9783540245469","title":"Numerical Methods for General and Structured Eigenvalue Problems","description":"Treatment includes generalized and structured eigenvalue problems and all vital aspects of eigenvalue computations. Although the task of accurate error estimation for the nonlinear equations of CFD seems a daunting problem, considerable effort has centered on this challenge in recent years with notable progress being made by the use of advanced error estimation techniques and adaptive discretization methods. To address this important topic, a special course wasjointly organized by the NATO Research and Technology Office (RTO), the von Karman Insti- tute for Fluid Dynamics, and the NASA Ames Research Center. The NATO RTO sponsored course entitled Error Estimation and Solution Adaptive Discretization in CFD was held September 10-14, 2002 at the NASA Ames Research Center and October 15-19, 2002 at the von Karman Institute in Belgium. During the special course, a series of comprehensive lectures by leading experts discussed recent advances and technical progress in the area of numerical error estimation and adaptive discretization methods with spe- cific emphasis on computational fluid dynamics. Immanuel Kant (1724-1804) Numerical simulations playa key role in many areas of modern science and technology. They are necessary in particular when experiments for the underlying problem are too dangerous, too expensive or not even possible. The latter situation appears for example when relevant length scales are below the observation level. Moreover, numerical simulations are needed to control complex processes and systems. In all these cases the relevant problems may become highly complex. Hence the following issues are of vital importance for a numerical simulation: - Efficiency of the numerical solvers: Efficient and fast numerical schemes are the basis for a simulation of 'real world' problems. This becomes even more important for realtime problems where the runtime of the numerical simulation has to be of the order of the time span required by the simulated process. Without efficient solution methods the simulation of many problems is not feasible. 'Efficient' means here that the overall cost of the numerical scheme remains proportional to the degrees of freedom, i. e. , the numerical approximation is determined in linear time when the problem size grows e. g. to upgrade accuracy. Of course, as soon as the solution of large systems of equations is involved this requirement is very demanding.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52323460448529,"sku":"NLS9783540430551","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9783540430551.jpg?v=1757975858"},{"product_id":"introduction-to-recent-developments-in-theory-and-numerics-for-conservation-laws-book-christian-rohde-9783540650812","title":"An Introduction to Recent Developments in Theory and Numerics for Conservation Laws","description":"The importance of hyperbolic conservation laws for scientific and industrial applications has led to a growing amount of research activity in this field. A variety of physical phenomena in fluid mechanics, astrophysics, groundwa- ter flow, meteorology, reactive flow and several other areas can be effectively modeled by systems of conservation laws. In order to focus recent trends in theory and numerics in this research area and to stimulate further research in this field, we decided to organize the International School on Theory and Numerics for Conservation Laws, which took place in FreiburgjLittenweiler, Germany, from 20 to 24 October 1997. The school was sponsored by the DFG-Graduiertenkolleg Nichtlineare Dif- ferentialgleichungen, Modellierung, Theorie, Numerik, Visualisierung at the University of Freiburg. It was attended by about 60 young international re- searchers. This volume contains the contributions of the five main lecturers of the school. Each article covers five hours of lectures on a specific new research area in the field of theory and numerics for conservation laws. Reviews of recent de- velopments are given, accompanied by new research results of the authors. The topics include a kinetic approach to conservation laws by Benoit Perthame, which can be used for the construction of approximate Riemann solvers for the full system of gas dynamics. Several ideas related to the stability and entropy analysis are discussed.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":52330943021329,"sku":null,"price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52330943611153,"sku":"NLS9783540650812","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9783540650812.jpg?v=1758146895"},{"product_id":"hierarchical-matrices-book-mario-bebendorf-9783540771463","title":"Hierarchical Matrices","description":"Hierarchical matrices are an efficient framework for large-scale fully populated matrices arising, e.g., from the finite element discretization of solution operators of elliptic boundary value problems. In addition to storing such matrices, approximations of the usual matrix operations can be computed with logarithmic-linear complexity, which can be exploited to setup approximate preconditioners in an efficient and convenient way. Besides the algorithmic aspects of hierarchical matrices, the main aim of this book is to present their theoretical background.   The book contains the existing approximation theory for elliptic problems including partial differential operators with nonsmooth coefficients. Furthermore, it presents in full detail the adaptive cross approximation method for the efficient treatment of integral operators with non-local kernel functions. The theory is supported by many numerical experiments from real applications.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":52337151246609,"sku":null,"price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52337151901969,"sku":"NLS9783540771463","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9783540771463.jpg?v=1758165719"},{"product_id":"numerical-mathematics-and-advanced-applications-enumath-2013-book-assyr-abdulle-9783319107042","title":"Numerical Mathematics and Advanced Applications - ENUMATH 2013","description":"This book gathers a selection of invited and contributed lectures from the European Conference on Numerical Mathematics and Advanced Applications (ENUMATH) held in Lausanne, Switzerland, August 26-30, 2013. Domain decomposition methods solve boundary value problems by splitting them into smaller boundary value problems on subdomains and iterating to coordinate the solution between adjacent subdomains. Domain decomposition methods have considerable potential for a parallelization of the finite element methods, and serve a basis for distributed, parallel computations.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":52341607661841,"sku":null,"price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52341611430161,"sku":"NLS9783319523880","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9783319523880.jpg?v=1758171926"},{"product_id":"high-performance-scientific-and-engineering-computing-book-hans-joachim-bungartz-9783540657309","title":"High Performance Scientific and Engineering Computing","description":"Since the creation of the term Scientific Computing and of its German counterpart Wissenschaftliches Rechnen (whoever has to be blamed for that), scientists from outside the field have been confused about the some- what strange distinction between scientific and non-scientific computations. And the insiders, i. e. those who are, at least, convinced of always comput- ing in a very scientific way, are far from being happy with this summary of their daily work, even if further characterizations like High Performance or Engineering try to make things clearer - usually with very modest suc- cess, however. Moreover, to increase the unfortunate confusion of terms, who knows the differences between Computational Science and Engineering, as indicated in the title of the series these proceedings were given the honour to be published in, and Scientific and Engineering Computing, as chosen for the title of our book? Actually, though the protagonists of scientific com- puting persist in its independence as a scientific discipline (and rightly so, of course), the ideas behind the term diverge wildly. Consequently, the variety of answers one can get to the question What is scientific computing? is really impressive and ranges from the (serious) nothing else but numerical analysis up to the more mocking consuming as much CPU-time as possible on the most powerful number crunchers accessible .","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":52342581428497,"sku":null,"price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52342581985553,"sku":"NLS9783540657309","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9783540657309.jpg?v=1758172829"},{"product_id":"domain-decomposition-methods-in-science-and-engineering-xxv-book-ronald-haynes-9783030567491","title":"Domain Decomposition Methods in Science and Engineering XXV","description":"These are the proceedings of the 25th International Conference on Domain Decomposition Methods in Science and Engineering, which was held in St. John's, Newfoundland, Canada in July 2018.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":52342671638801,"sku":null,"price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52342675341585,"sku":"NLS9783030567491","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9783030567491.jpg?v=1758172925"},{"product_id":"frontiers-and-challenges-in-warm-dense-matter-book-frank-graziani-9783319049113","title":"Frontiers and Challenges in Warm Dense Matter","description":"Warm Dense Matter (WDM) occupies a loosely defined region of phase space intermediate between solid, liquid, gas, and plasma, and typically shares characteristics of two or more of these phases. WDM is generally associated with the combination of strongly coupled ions and moderately degenerate electrons, and careful attention to quantum physics and electronic structure is essential. The lack of a small perturbation parameter greatly limits approximate attempts at its accurate description. Since WDM resides at the intersection of solid state and high energy density physics, many high energy density physics (HEDP) experiments pass through this difficult region of phase space. Thus, understanding and modeling WDM is key to the success of experiments on diverse facilities. These include the National Ignition Campaign centered on the National Ignition Facility (NIF), pulsed-power driven experiments on the Z machine, ion-beam-driven WDM experiments on the NDCX-II, and fundamental WDM research at the Linear Coherent Light Source (LCLS). Warm Dense Matter is also ubiquitous in planetary science and astrophysics, particularly with respect to unresolved questions concerning the structure and age of the gas giants, the nature of exosolar planets, and the cosmochronology of white dwarf stars. In this book we explore established and promising approaches to the modeling of WDM, foundational issues concerning the correct theoretical description of WDM, and the challenging practical issues of numerically modeling strongly coupled systems with many degrees of freedom.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52344162320657,"sku":"NLS9783319049113","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9783319049113.jpg?v=1758174381"},{"product_id":"geometrically-unfitted-finite-element-methods-and-applications-book-erik-burman-9783319714301","title":"Geometrically Unfitted Finite Element Methods and Applications","description":"This book provides a snapshot of the state of the art of the rapidly evolving field of integration of geometric data in finite element computations.    The contributions to this volume, based on research presented at the UCL workshop on the topic in January 2016, include three review papers on core topics such as fictitious domain methods for elasticity, trace finite element methods for partial differential equations defined on surfaces, and Nitsche’s method for contact problems. Five chapters present original research articles on related theoretical topics, including Lagrange multiplier methods, interface problems, bulk-surface coupling, and approximation of partial differential equations on moving domains. Finally, two chapters discuss advanced applications such as crack propagation or flow in fractured poroelastic media.    This is the first volume that provides a comprehensive overview of the field of unfitted finite element methods, including recent techniques such as cutFEM, traceFEM, ghost penalty, and augmented Lagrangian techniques. It is aimed at researchers in applied mathematics, scientific computing or computational engineering.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":52344498389265,"sku":null,"price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52344502124817,"sku":"NLS9783319714301","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9783319714301.jpg?v=1758174680"},{"product_id":"multiscale-methods-in-science-and-engineering-book-olof-runborg-9783540253358","title":"Multiscale Methods in Science and Engineering","description":"Multiscale problems naturally pose severe challenges for computational science and engineering. The smaller scales must be well resolved over the range of the larger scales. Challenging multiscale problems are very common and are found in e.g. materials science, fluid mechanics, electrical and mechanical engineering. Homogenization, subgrid modelling, heterogeneous multiscale methods, multigrid, multipole, and adaptive algorithms are examples of methods to tackle these problems. This volume is an overview of current mathematical and computational methods for problems with multiple scales with applications in chemistry, physics and engineering.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":52350284628241,"sku":null,"price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52350285119761,"sku":"NLS9783540253358","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9783540253358.jpg?v=1758180058"},{"product_id":"numerical-geometry-grid-generation-and-scientific-computing-book-vladimir-a-garanzha-9783030234355","title":"Numerical Geometry, Grid Generation and Scientific Computing","description":"The focus of these conference proceedings is on research, development, and applications in the fields of numerical geometry, scientific computing and numerical simulation, particularly in mesh generation and related problems.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":52353344340241,"sku":null,"price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52353345028369,"sku":"NLS9783030234355","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9783030234355.jpg?v=1758182832"}],"url":"https:\/\/www.worldofbooks.com\/en-au\/collections\/lecture-notes-in-computational-science-and-engineering-book-series.oembed?page=2","provider":"World of Books ","version":"1.0","type":"link"}
