Based on extensive local research, this volume of essays breaks new ground by examining some important aspects of the social history of Chester between 1830 and 1900. By combining detailed case studies of specific themes with wider discussion, these essays explore the ways in which Cestrian society reacted to the changing circumstances of the Victorian period and analyse local perceptions of, and responses to, a range of contemporary social problems. As such, this original study not only illuminates the social and cultural history of the period, but also illustrates both the complexity and diversity of Victorian cities. It includes the most comprehensive bibliography of Victorian Chester to date.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":49519053013265,"sku":"GOR002632305","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":53597275259153,"sku":"GOR006728659","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/0853236615.jpg?v=1750747359"},{"product_id":"oliver-lodge-and-the-liverpool-physical-society-book-peter-rowlands-9780853230274","title":"Oliver Lodge and the Liverpool Physical Society","description":"In 1889, Liverpool's first Professor of Physics, Oliver Lodge, was invited to form a society for the cultivation of physics in the city. Lodge is commonly regarded as a conservative in comparison with many of the physicists of his time, a time when the most fundamental theories and discoveries about the nature of space, matter and time were being made. However, this book argues that this view needs to be modified. It advances the idea that Lodge's theory of \"ether\", his attempt to provide a unified explanation for the nuclear physics, has been somewhat revived by recent work in quantum electro-dynamics. However, the book stresses that no assessment of Lodge's can be complete without considering his influence as an educator and expounder of comlex ideas of which he had a remarkable grasp which he could communicate with great lucidity.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":49539037692177,"sku":"GOR009537936","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/0853230277.jpg?v=1750850218"},{"product_id":"yellow-jack-and-the-worm-book-duncan-crewe-9780853232674","title":"Yellow Jack and the Worm","description":"Between 1739 and 1742, Britain's major war effort against Spain was concentrated in the Caribbean. This book sets out to examine the problems involved in operating and administering the overseas naval bases at the heart of this effort. Drawing largely on unpublished archive material, it paints a detailed picture of the organisation and development of the yard facilities at Jamaica and English Harbour, as well as examining the problems of manning and supplying the ships stationed there. Making extensive use of ships' muster books, the author provides for the first time a quantitative assessment of the problems of sickness and desertion facing the commanders in the West Indies. The title of this book is taken from the two most common diseases suffered by the men stationed in the Caribbean.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":49578111369489,"sku":"GOR004226956","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/0853232679.jpg?v=1750883172"},{"product_id":"paris-1918-book-david-dutton-9780853236573","title":"Paris 1918","description":"The diary of the 17th Earl of Derby, once thought to have been lost, provides a detailed and important account of the last months of the First World War as seen through the eyes of the British Ambassador in Paris. Derby was in many ways an unlikely choice as ambassador. He was not a diplomat and could not, on his arrival, speak French. His appointment owed much to Lloyd George's determination to remove him from his previous post as Secretary of State for War. But, after a somewhat uncertain start, he proved to be a very successful ambassador upon whom successive Foreign Secretaries, Arthur Balfour and Lord Curzon, relied heavily for their appreciation of the situation on the other side of the Channel. Derby took up his appointment at a crucial period of the war when military victory still seemed some way off. He became an assiduous collector of information which he dictated into his diary on a daily basis. Derby's embassy became renowned for its lavish hospitality. But this was far from being self-indulgence, for he firmly believed that entertaining was the best way to win the confidence of his French associates and therefore to obtain information that would be of use in London. Derby's diary provides important insights into the state of the war, the often strained relationship between Britain and France and the intrigues of French domestic politics.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":49928695578897,"sku":"GOR009494142","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/0853236577.jpg?v=1751202031"},{"product_id":"popular-politics-riot-and-labour-book-john-belchem-9780853234272","title":"Popular Politics, Riot and Labour","description":"Based on extensive new research, this volume of essays explores the contrast between Liverpool's contemporary image and its historical experience. The 'shock city' of post-industrial Britain, Liverpool is now identified by a self-defeating image, condemned to failure by a militant micro-culture of truculent defiance, collective solidarity and fatalist humour. Much of the image, however, is media myth, lacking in historical resonance before the city's recent economic decline. In contrast with its current projection, Liverpool's past is not well-known. Failing to conform to the main pattern and narrative of modem British history, the city has attracted little attention from historians other than as the exception which proved the rule. These essays seek to redress the balance, to reconstruct a distinctive Liverpool identity in a manner which belies media distortion or historiographical condescension. An exercise in new labour history, this volume illuminates, the complex social history of Liverpool popular politics.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ -","offer_id":50445529612561,"sku":"","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":50445529973009,"sku":"GOR004159559","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":52644710744337,"sku":"GOR006839427","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/0853234272.jpg?v=1750703536"},{"product_id":"his-majestys-loyal-opposition-book-david-dutton-9780853234470","title":"His Majestys Loyal Opposition","description":"This book describes the workings of a major political party in opposition during a period recognised as being of crucial importance in the development of the modern British political system. It attempts to explain why - uniquely in the twentieth century - the Unionist Party was unsuccessful at three consecutive general elections; why the period was dominated by internal party dissension when the presentation of a united image was naturally of some importance; and why, even by the outbreak of the European War in 1914, the Party's recovery was at best partial and uncertain. This is a 'high politics' study, based primarily upon a wide range of unpublished private papers. It contributes not only to the history of the Conservative and Unionist Party, but also to a controversial period of British history whose study is still, despite some notable exceptions, dominated by writings on the Liberal and Labour Parties.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ -","offer_id":50479548268817,"sku":"","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":50479548563729,"sku":"GOR009350566","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/0853234477.jpg?v=1751233794"},{"product_id":"coals-on-rails-or-the-reason-of-my-wrighting-book-peh-hair-9780853232667","title":"Coals on Rails, Or the Reason of my Wrighting","description":"In the 1820s, Anthony Errington, a marginally literate working man, wrote an autobiography covering his life from birth at Felling-on-Tyne in 1788 up to his middle years, and his career from the age of thirteen, working in various Tyneside coalmines as a waggon and waggonway wright. A contemporary of George Stephenson, Anthony Errington was one of the early railwaymen who literally prepared the way for the age of steam locomotion. But his work also took him underground, and he narrowly escaped being one of the victims of the 1812 mining disaster at Felling Colliery. The anecdotes which form the autobiography deal with many curious episodes in his life, both underground and on the surface, and his selection of anecdotes to some extent expresses his faith, as a Roman Catholic, in 'Divine Providence'. A general introduction sets the autobiography within its historical and topographical context, and a series of commentaries provides the reader who wishes to explore further with an analysis of several aspects of the autobiography.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":50495937315089,"sku":"GOR005150983","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ WELL_READ \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":51433797189905,"sku":"GOR014275140","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/0853232660.jpg?v=1750787082"},{"product_id":"liverpool-park-estates-book-susan-george-9780853234098","title":"Liverpool Park Estates","description":"The rapid growth of nineteenth-century English cities produced leafy suburbs, and an occasional feature of these was the development of the estate park of modestly secluded Victorian villas. To preserve their valued amenities, such parks bound the middle-class owners of houses within them by restrictive legal covenants. The documents relating to such parks are often inaccessible, but for three of them in Liverpool, the available records enable their early history to be studied. The first part of this book deals with the legal basis and evolution of the restrictive covenant, a device still of considerable importance in housing development and amenity protection across England. The second part deals individually with the three Liverpool parks, the social reasons for their foundation and growth, and the problems that beset the entrepreneurs who established them in the mid-nineteenth century (and often then lived in them) during the early years of the parks’ existence. After more than a hundred years, all three of the parks studied continue not only as highly favoured residential areas, but also as exemplars of the success of the deployment of the restrictive covenant.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ -","offer_id":50706495635729,"sku":"","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":50706495930641,"sku":"GOR003487921","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ LIKE_NEW \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":53451008377105,"sku":"GOR014927848","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/0853234094.jpg?v=1751363411"},{"product_id":"brass-plate-and-brazen-impudence-book-christine-hillam-9780853231172","title":"Brass Plate and Brazen Impudence","description":"This study of the development of dental practice between 1755-1855 attempts to trace the factors and conditions that helped the occupation achieve professional status. It looks at the situation in the provinces since, in many respects, it is here that the difficulties encountering the new profession are most apparent. The book does not intend to be a complete picture of dentistry in this period, but readers are directed to the bibliography for details of the extensive literature on the scientific and social aspects of dentistry at the time. Throughout, dentistry is used in a specific sensae, conveying the meaning which led to the very coining of the word in the 18th century, namely the treatment of the teeth and oral tissues by preventative, restorative, prosthetic and surgical means. Although toothdrawers of many varieties feature in this study, they are not synonymous with the dentists who are the main subject of this work.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ -","offer_id":51172061151505,"sku":"","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":51172061217041,"sku":"GOR004383987","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/0853231176.jpg?v=1751043668"},{"product_id":"reflections-on-the-battlefield-book-j-r-rider-9780853238874","title":"Reflections on the Battlefield","description":"When Robert J. Rider died in 1961, he left to his descendants a typescript text, tentatively entitled Flashbacks, which would eventually become Reflections on the Battlefield. Broadly autobiographical, this text offers a unique account of its author who fought as an infantryman while also serving as a chaplain, thus exposing himself in peculiar directness to the ambiguities of chaplaincy service on the battlefield. A further particularity is that Rider was in a minority among chaplains, being a Methodist chaplain. In August 1914, Rider, aged twenty-five, was about to begin his third year of training for the ministry of the Wesleyan Methodist church, at Handsworth Theological College in Birmingham. Two months later he had enlisted with the First Birmingham Battalion, later termed the 14th Battalion, of the Royal Warwickshire Regiment. Rider's first-hand accounts of Ypres, the Somme and Arras reveal a man morally opposed to war and yet adamant that Germany and her allies needed to be defeated. Reflections on the Battlefield provides us with a personal and valuable contribution to the present-day debate about the contemporary understanding of the ethics of war, as expressed on the World War I battlefield.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ -","offer_id":51824405283089,"sku":null,"price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":51824405479697,"sku":"GOR007124071","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9780853238874.jpg?v=1752659112"},{"product_id":"cathedral-open-and-free-book-alex-bruce-9780853239246","title":"The Cathedral Open and Free","description":"The work of Frank Selwyn Macaulay Bennett, Dean of Chester 1920-1937 is evaluated here, as well as the influence the changes he instituted at Chester had on other cathedrals. His earlier work and his writings are examined for the light they shed on his practice. In the early 20th century, Anglican cathedrals in England were perceived as remote and unwelcoming places, of interest mainly to antiquarians. Visitors were charged admission. In 1920, Frank Bennett declared Chester Cathedral open and free. Voluntary offerings put the Cathedral's finances in credit, the fabric of the church and adjoining monastic buildings had been repaired, renovated and developed. The reforms he instituted were emulated elsewhere and began a revolution in the regime of cathedrals throughout Europe.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ -","offer_id":51849982804241,"sku":null,"price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":51849982837009,"sku":"GOR004134654","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9780853239246.jpg?v=1753530473"},{"product_id":"crimean-doctors-book-john-a-shepherd-9780853231677","title":"The Crimean Doctors","description":null,"brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":53448139014417,"sku":"GOR003295809","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9780853231677.jpg?v=1776854297"}],"url":"https:\/\/www.worldofbooks.com\/en-au\/collections\/liverpool-historical-studies-book-series.oembed","provider":"World of Books ","version":"1.0","type":"link"}
