Shrewsbury celebrated the arrival of trains on 12th October 1848, when a line to Chester was opened. Bells were rung and crowds of people turned out to wave and cheer as the train passed by. After this, main lines were built linking Shrewsbury with Wolverhampton, Hereford and Crewe. Branch lines followed throughout the county, connecting remote villages and towns and providing transport not only for passengers, but for goods as well. Farms, quarries and mines had at last found a quicker and more reliable way to get their products to market.  This was the heyday of the railway age, but it was not to last. Some of the lines closed in the late 1920s. By the early 1930s competition from road transport led to more closures and the steady decline continued through to the Beeching Act of the 1960s when many remaining lines were lost.  In this book, author Leslie Oppitz explains the history of these lost lines - the reasons for their construction and for their closure. His account also covers the preserved lines of the Welshpool and Llanfair Light Railway, the Telford Horsehay Steam Trust and the Severn Valley Railway. In March 1843 rural Essex moved into the railway age when the first passenger trains began to run between London Shoreditch and Colchester. Subsequent routes helped to create the county's tourist trade, promoting the growth of holiday resorts such as Clacton-on-Sea, Southend-on-Sea and Walton-on-the-Naze. Two great men dominated the expansion of railways in the area: George Stephenson, whose Stockton-Darlington railway was extended to Middlesbrough in 1830, and George Hudson, dubbed 'The Railway King'. In 13 years, until Hudson's downfall in 1849, his companies were responsible for building 350 miles of track reaching such towns and cities as Harrogate, York, Scarborough and Hull.  Of the 900 miles of rail track and 300 stations that existed at that time, fewer than 390 miles and 80 stations remain as part of today's national network. As the motorcar became more accessible and affordable, the numbers of passengers using the area's railways started to decline. Lines began to close, hastened by the Beeching Report in 1963.  It's a far cry from the heyday of the railway age in the 1920s and 1930s, when excursion trains would bring excited holidaymakers to Whitby, Scarborough and Bridlington, and freight trains serviced the local lime, iron ore and chalk quarries. Northumberland, with its many coal mines, was the home and the heart of the Industrial Revolution. Local man George Stephenson, the inventor of the steam locomotive and dubbed the ‘Father of the Railways', also played his part. In 1829 he surveyed a route from Newcastle to Carlisle and, by 1835, the first section of the track between Blaydon and Hexham was opened.   After this, railway companies and new lines proliferated, driven by the need to get the mined coal to customers, both at home and abroad, and to open up the majority of Northumberland which was, and still is, a predominantly rural county.  This was the heyday of the Railway Age. Passenger numbers grew and, in the 1850s, new quays were built on the Tyne, with facilities for passenger ferries to such places as Bergen and Oslo. Later, boat trains were run from London Kings Cross.  Sadly, the boom was not to last. Motorised transport became more accessible and affordable in the 1930s and lines began to close. Of the 316 miles of railway line and 119 stations open then, only 130 miles of track and 20 stations remain today. Two lines, though, have experienced a revival thanks to thriving local preservation societies bringing ever more miles back into use for an enthusiastic public. Hampshire is unique in railway history. It was one of the earliest counties to have a main line and one of the last to relinquish steam.  A line linking London with Southampton was first proposed in 1831, but it was not until July 1834 that work began. At that time Southampton was little more than a fishing village, although it was fast showing signs of development into a commercial port.  During the 1840s expansion was rapid. Several railway promoters were looking towards Portsmouth and its naval traffic. There were also plans to extend westwards towards Exeter and to provide a north-south link to Southampton via Newbury and Winchester.  The battles between different companies were bitter and expensive. To the north of the county, lines were built to prevent the GWR reaching Southampton and to the east, the struggles between the London and South Western Railway (L\u0026amp;SWR) and the London, Brighton \u0026amp; South Coast Railway (LB\u0026amp;SCR) were many, culminating in the famous Battle of Havant in 1858.   The heyday of the railways was short-lived and by the 1920s, they began to decline. The 1950s saw railways give way to increasing road competition and after the Beeching Act of the early 1960s, many more were lost.  This book recalls the history of these lost lines.
