In this first authoritative monograph on the subject, Charles Little and Elizabeth Parker explore in depth the art and meaning of this remarkable 12th-century monument. The authors bring a wealth of new information to the questions of its origin and stylistic connections, its complex iconographical programme and its enigmatic inscriptions. Moreover, they put into a new perspective the cultural and intellectual background against which artistic patronage in England would have been exercised, and the theological and liturgical considerations which would have influenced the execution of the Cross in particulier. In this is the first authoritative monograph on the subject of the splendid and intriguing ivory cross, probably made at Bury St.Edmunds and now widely recognized as a masterpiece of English Romanesque art, its art and meaning are explored.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":50023931609361,"sku":"GOR009415524","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ LIKE_NEW \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":50775547379985,"sku":"GOR014067587","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52674655453457,"sku":"NLS9781872501901","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/1872501907.jpg?v=1750867515"},{"product_id":"early-netherlandish-painting-from-rogier-van-der-weyden-to-gerard-david-book-otto-pacht-9781872501840","title":"Early Netherlandish Painting from Rogier van der Weyden to Gerard David","description":"Otto Pacht's studies of the Early Netherlandish painters are the fruit of a lifetime's research. Pacht's approach to art history is shaped by his conviction that visual art, like music, can say things in its own medium that cannot be said in any other. He aims to sharpen our perceptions by recreating the social and cultural context in which an object was made, clarifying unfamiliar notions of space and time or significant gestures and symbols which are no longer recognizable. Each part of Pacht's analysis is illustrated by reference to a specific manuscript, painting, building or sculpture, and his examples range from medieval and Renaissance art through to the works of Rembrandt. He explores the theories of major thinkers from Riegl, Wolfflin and Croce to Panofsky and Gombrich. But the emphasis always returns to the activity of looking, and Pacht's greatest achievement is in showing the student and general reader alike how to practise art history in their own encounters with works of art.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"US \/ GOOD \/ SBYB","offer_id":50337943552273,"sku":"CIN1872501265G","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52668557951249,"sku":"NLS9781872501260","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/1872501265.jpg?v=1751060916"},{"product_id":"ottonian-book-illumination-book-henry-mayr-harting-9781872501796","title":"Ottonian Book Illumination","description":"The seminal work, originally published in two seperate clothbound volumes, is now made available in a revised one-volume edition, both in hardback and in paperback. This richly illustrated book uses mainly unpublished documentation to investigate a range of multi-media urban, architectural and artistic projects promoted by Paul III. It adopts a multi-disciplinary approach to deepen our knowledge of Rome's visual culture after the Sack of 1527, providing a nuanced and fresh understanding of the social, economic and political conditions underpinning the creation of celebrated masterpieces, like Michelangelo's Last Judgement or his design of the Campidoglio. This study - the first entirely dedicated to Rome during the pontificate of Paul III - re-conceptualizes the periodization of Rome's early-modern history, which is traditionally polarized between the High Renaissance and the Baroque, and establishes Paul III's reign as the hinge between these two, seemingly disconnected, periods. In addressing these topics, artworks and urban spaces are analyzed as a means to engage with themes intensely discussed in recent scholarship, such as the creation of space, the inhabited urban environment and the intersection of art, politics and propaganda.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ -","offer_id":51692820201745,"sku":"","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ GARDNERS","offer_id":51692820300049,"sku":"NGR9781912554430","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52674045051153,"sku":"NLS9781912554430","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/1912554437.jpg?v=1751412493"},{"product_id":"king-s-college-chapel-1515-2015-book-jean-massing-9781909400214","title":"King's College Chapel 1515-2015","description":"This newly researched and richly illustrated volume of essays is published to commemorate the five-hundredth anniversary of the completion of King's College Chapel. Eighteen eminent scholars explore the religious, cultural and artistic history of this spectacular building, from its foundation to the present day. They variously engage with politics, iconoclasm, aesthetics, drama, performance and sound; and, with a fresh and contemporary look at these topics, reveal the way in which the life of the Chapel, both religious and less religious, has developed and changed over the last five hundred years. The collection of essays covers many varied aspects of the Chapel: the architectural engineering of the magnificent vaulting, the current state of the glorious stained glass windows, and the Chapel's altar-pieces, among which the famous painting by Rubens, The Adoration of the Magi, has pride of place. Some of the fascinating personalities who have shaped the Chapel's role in the life of the College are the subject of other essays. Finally, the history of the Chapel's musical culture is traced from the first hundred years of the building's existence up to the twenty-first century, documenting the effect on service and ritual performance of the constantly changing religious practices and musicological values of the past, but at the same time focusing on the present-day fame of the King's College Choir and the vibrant musical life of the Chapel. To accompany the text, the volume contains over two hundred and forty illustrations, mostly in colour, offering a corpus of images of King's College Chapel - prints, watercolours, oil paintings, photographs, architectural drawings, plans, maps and even postcards. These reflect the many and varied responses that the Chapel has elicited over time.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ -","offer_id":51869695246609,"sku":null,"price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":51869695377681,"sku":"GOR011189446","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52680911651089,"sku":"NLS9781909400214","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9781909400214.jpg?v=1754095553"},{"product_id":"venetian-painting-15th-century-book-otto-pacht-9781872501543","title":"Venetian Painting 15th Century","description":"Otto Pacht, one of the most significant art-historians of the 'Vienna School', and well known for his analyses of Early Netherlandish art, turns his attention in this publication to the humanist circle of Early Renaissance painters in Venice, dominated by Jacopo Bellini, his sons Gentile and Giovanni, and also his son-in-law Andrea Mantegna. It was a period of newly awakened interest in the Antique, of studies made directly from nature, and of trial and error in the technique of perspective. And in addition, a new awareness of the role of light and colour in the devotional and often monumental images of the Madonna, of altarpieces and of allegories contributed to the founding of what we now recognise as the hall-mark of Venetian painting, that culminated with Titian. Of the Bellini family, it has been Giovanni who was generally regarded as the major figure of the dynasty. Pacht, however, devotes particular attention to Jacopo's work, interpreting it as the basis for his sons' later development. He analyses Jacopo's London and Paris Sketchbook drawings, demonstrating where Late Gothic elements can be seen to be overtaken by the need to give perspective depth to the image, and how subsequent painting took account of these changes. This is also the essence of Pacht's examination of Mantegna's work, where the construction of space and depth is the key to our understanding of Mantegna's creative process.Turning to the next generation of the Bellini family, Pachts guides our eyes to appreciate the refinement and perception of Gentile's portraits, and finally takes us step by step through the works of Giovanni, where fantasy combines with the play of colour and light in creating compositions, devotional images, and landscape settings of perfect harmony and beauty.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52662568386833,"sku":"NLS9781872501543","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9781872501543.jpg?v=1762269807"},{"product_id":"sephardic-book-art-of-the-fifteenth-century-book-luis-u-afonso-9781909400597","title":"Sephardic Book Art of the Fifteenth Century","description":"The current volume presents ten different studies dealing with the final stages of Hebrew book art production in medieval Iberia. Church interiors were enlivened by altarpieces representing biblical and heavenly musicians, placed in conjunction with the ritual song of the liturgy. The interior spaces of palaces and private houses, in which musical recreations were routine, were adorned with paintings depicting musical characters and myths of the ancient world, and with scenes of contemporary festivity in which music played a central role. Musical luminaries and dilettantes commissioned portraits symbolising their personal and social investment in musical expertise and skill. Such visual representations of music both reflected and sustained a musical culture. The strategies adopted by visual artists when depicting music in any guise betray period understandings of music shared by artists and their clients. At the same time, Renaissance Italians experienced music within a visual environment that prompted them to think about music in particular ways. This book offers the first detailed survey of the representation of music in the art of Renaissance Italy, and in the process opens up new vistas within the social and cultural history of Italian Renaissance music and art.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":52663268245777,"sku":null,"price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52663269359889,"sku":"NLS9781912554027","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9781912554027.jpg?v=1762271577"},{"product_id":"taddeo-di-bartolo-book-gail-elizabeth-solberg-9781909400818","title":"Taddeo Di Bartolo","description":"Taddeo di Bartolo, Siena's premier painter in the years around 1400, is the focus of a cultural history of a great Italian school in an understudied period. His patrons commissioned important fresco cycles and the most impressive polyptychs of the age. In part a travelogue, the text follows Taddeo (ca 1362-1422) from training in straitened times at Siena across central and northern Italy. Ten years of itinerancy drew him to various Tuscan centers, along the Ligurian coast from Genoa to Provence, probably to Padua, and into Umbria. About 1399 he resettled at Siena to rapidly become the preferred painter of his commune. His mural cycles made a greater imprint on Siena's civic iconography than has been acknowledged while his efficient Sienese shop produced outstanding panel paintings for, among others, the most dynamic religious orders. Until his last years he received grand commissions in and from beyond Siena. He drew a pope's portrait and was employed by a cardinal at Rome. Attention to his production methods shows how his busy shop ensured variety in numerous paintings for mid-level clients by a flexible design system. Taddeo's works, including rediscovered and reconstructed paintings, come alive in beautiful illustrations. This chronicle of an indefatigable and successful late medieval career positions the painter, his colleagues, and his patrons in their political, economic, and social circumstances. It provides new insights on Siena's artistic culture at the start of the Renaissance.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":52664587550993,"sku":null,"price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52664588370193,"sku":"NLS9781909400818","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9781909400818.jpg?v=1762275003"},{"product_id":"early-netherlandish-painting-book-monika-rosenauer-9781905375707","title":"Early Netherlandish Painting","description":"Otto Pacht's studies of the Early Netherlandish painters are the fruit of a lifetime's research. Although this book sets out to trace the development of the Virgin's role as intercessor from the twelfth century onwards from a devotional, liturgical and theological viewpoint, it quickly becomes apparent that her high rank as intercessor is entirely dependent on her central status in medieval thinking as Dei Genetrix - Mother of God. It is an iconographic study simply because the subject cannot be understood through textual evidence alone, and the structure of the book, which looks in turn at six types of images of intercession, is determined on this basis. Yet images are considered throughout in relation to texts, and due attention is given to important Mariological writings of the period from Anselm to John Lydgate. Whilst the subject relates to Western European culture as a whole, the book deliberately focuses on English Marian devotion as a case study, an area often overlooked by art historians, but one which yields fascinating insights into the subject.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52666250920209,"sku":"NLS9781905375240","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9781905375240.jpg?v=1762279468"},{"product_id":"manuscript-painting-in-thirteenth-century-flanders-book-kerstin-carlvant-9781905375677","title":"Manuscript Painting in Thirteenth-Century Flanders","description":"This is the first comprehensive and in-depth study of the earliest figural painting ever to have been produced in Flanders on a continual basis. Three main categories of illuminator are distinguishable: those working in Bruges, in Ghent, and, at least in part, for the circle of the counts of Flanders. The principal chapters and the catalog segments are organized around their individual contributions. An arrangement in time and place of the total body of work was obtained through a lengthy and rigorous process of comparison of figural, ornamental and writing styles, codicological and textual features. Several distinctive Flemish patterns of Psalter iconography have emerged; these are presented in tabular form with accompanying commentaries. Working in a French noble library around the year 1410, the anonymous compiler of the Chronique told the story of humanity - nearly six thousand years by his reckoning - by editing historical texts at his disposal, arranging them in parallel columns on a vertical scroll, and filling the inter-columnar space with complex genealogical diagrams. The Chronique reflects a particular and particularly French self-image and worldview that become increasingly apparent as the reader traverses its direct and unbroken line from the Bible, Egypt, Greece and Troy to the histories of the Papacy, the Roman and Holy Roman Empires, the Crusades, and the royal houses of France and England. The present volume includes an extensive study of the sources, origin, transmission and illustration of the Chronique along with a critical edition, facing translation, and the entireminiature cycle of manuscript W (ca. 1465, now in private hands). His masterpieces in the Doge's Palace conferred on the Republic a magnificence and authority that was rapidly dwindling by the end of the Renaissance. But on a private level, he also reshaped the fashions of the Serenissima through a steady stream of portrait commissions. Many members of Venice's most elite families sat for Veronese, as did notable artists and authors, including Titian and Sir Phillip Sidney. Once regarded as Venice's best portraitist, his talents in this genre unfortunately remain largely unknown to modern audiences. This book offers the first comprehensive study of the approximately forty portraits that survive. Shedding new light on early works, such as the pendants of the Da Porto and the frescos of the Barbaro in the Palladian villa at Maser, Professor Garton also examines Paolo's images of women within the larger polemics surrounding the anonymous beauties of Giorgione, Palma il Vecchio, and Titian. The author analyzes Veronese's innovations in martial portraiture, melancholic portrayals of artists and nobility, and evocations of the antique. Relevant issues of social history, class insecurity, and poetic convention are all brought to bear in deciphering the meanings of these images and what they reveal about the painter and his clientele. This layered study of Venice's golden age of painting ends appropriately with a glance at the moderns who profited most from the study of Veronese's portraits: Jean-Baptiste Carpeaux, Henri Fantin-Latour, Mary Cassatt, and Henri Matisse. A complete catalogue of Veronese's portraits follows the chapters.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":52667796619537,"sku":null,"price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52667797307665,"sku":"NLS9781905375233","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9781905375233.jpg?v=1762283436"},{"product_id":"treasure-memory-nature-book-philippe-cordez-9781912554614","title":"Treasure, Memory, Nature","description":"Precious metalwork, relics, chess pieces, ostrich eggs, unicorn horns, and bones of giants were among the treasury objects accumulated in churches during the Middle Ages. Found at Chertsey Abbey not far outside London and admired since the nineteenth century, we present here a new reconstruction of both the tiles and their previously-undeciphered Latin texts. The reconstruction demonstrates not only that the theme of the entire mosaic is the Crusades, but also that the overall appearance of the tiles, when laid as a floor, draws from the composition and iconography of imported Islamic and Byzantine silks. They had an enormous impact on artists until their destruction in the eighteenth century, and their interpretation has also had a significant bearing not only on the reception of this artist, but also of late Renaissance art in Florence. Based on archival and historical research, this book determines a new date for the inception of the fresco cycle and reconstructs the day-by-day activity in the church that had an impact on Pontormo's project. It reveals Pontormo's painstaking working method. The new reconstruction corrects the visual order of the frescoed scenes, and conclusively demonstrates the orthodoxy of the choir's iconography.? It sets them into the artistic and architectural context of the church of San Lorenzo, relating them to works of art by Fra Bartolomeo and Michelangelo, as well as to complex liturgical and religious functions. In its brightness and intense colour glazed terracotta strongly attracted the viewer's gaze. Its pure and radiant surfaces also had the power to raise the mind and soul of the faithful to contemplation of the divine. The quasi-magical process of firing earthenware coated with tin-based paste, promoted initially by imports from the East, was seized upon by Luca della Robbia, who realised that glazed terracotta was the ideal vehicle for the numinous. He began to create sculptures in the medium in the 1430s, and continued to produce them for the rest of his life. After Luca's death, his nephew, Andrea della Robbia, inherited his workshop in Florence and continued to develop the medium, together with his sons. The book considers some of the large-scale altarpieces created by the Della Robbia family in parallel with a number of small-scale figures in glazed terracotta, mostly made by unidentified sculptors. The captivating illustrations integrate these two categories of glazed terracotta sculpture into the history of Italian Renaissance art. By focusing on a specific artistic medium which stimulated piety in both ecclesiastical and domestic contexts, this book offers new ways of thinking about the religious art of the Italian Renaissance. The links it establishes between lay devotion and the creation of religious images in glazed terracotta invite reassessment of habitual distinctions between private and public art.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52674473296145,"sku":"NLS9781912554782","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9781912554782.jpg?v=1762299650"},{"product_id":"architectural-drawings-of-antonio-da-sangallo-the-younger-and-his-circle-book-christoph-frommel-9781912554393","title":"The Architectural Drawings of Antonio Da Sangallo the Younger and His Circle","description":"These volumes complete the catalogue of the Sangallo workshop drawings collection housed at the Uffizi Gallery in Florence. Throughout his illustrious career at Columbia University, Rosand indefatigably investigated the Venetian artist's pictorial intelligence, and much as the continuous conversation of an enduring friendship creates ever new levels of intimacy and understanding, this lifelong engagement resulted in some of the most convincing interpretations of Titian's artworks penned to date. While his scholarship has been extremely influential on Titian studies, Rosand's most significant texts on the artist are chapters in books with a broader subject or papers disseminated in journals and collective volumes. Through a careful selection of essays, curated around Rosand's primary concerns with Titian the painter and on the affective structures of his art, his technique and mimetic power, on its poetry, this book reconstitutes the many facets of his vision of the artist. The reader is invited to enjoy this volume both as a means to gain deeper insight into the art of Renaissance Venice, and also the shifting priorities in the field of art history in the second half of the twentieth century, which Rosand himself did much to mold. His ground-breaking interrogation of the relationship between making and meaning in Titian's art remains remarkably fresh and will doubtless continue to offer prompts to future generations of scholars. At the same time, his lively and inimitable style means his essays will engage any individual curious about art, its creation, and its connection to literature and society.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52674694021393,"sku":"NLS9781915487360","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"US \/ LIKE_NEW \/ SBYB","offer_id":52879279915281,"sku":"CIN1915487366LN","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9781915487360.jpg?v=1762300172"},{"product_id":"late-gothic-sculpture-in-northern-italy-book-anne-markham-schulz-9781912554805","title":"Late Gothic Sculpture in Northern Italy","description":"Over the course of a century and a half more than forty late Gothic sculptures have been recognized as sharing a vocabulary of figure and facial types, drapery, wings, and hair. How Filippo and Andrea and their numerous assistants, known generally as maestri caronesi, were linked and what kinds of organizations permitted such wide-spread activity over such a narrow span of time are questions asked here for the first time. On the basis of close analyses of comparable works, moreover, it proves possible - not only to identify the chief among these maestri caronesi as Andrea da Giona (d. 1449) - but to follow his career in Castiglione Olona, Milan, and Venice where he was preeminent during the transition from late Gothic to Renaissance sculpture.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":52674757918993,"sku":null,"price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52674758574353,"sku":"NLS9781912554805","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9781912554805.jpg?v=1762300324"},{"product_id":"pleasure-and-politics-at-the-court-of-france-book-tracy-hamilton-9781905375684","title":"Pleasure and Politics at the Court of France","description":"For her commissioning and performance of a French vernacular version of the Arabic Tale of the Thousand and One Nights - recorded in one of the most vivid and sumptuous late thirteenth-century manuscripts extant - as well as for her numerous other commissions, Queen Marie de Brabant (1260-1321) was heralded as a literary and intellectual patron comparable to Alexander the Great and Charlemagne. Nevertheless, classic studies of the late medieval period understate Marie's connection to the contemporary rise of secular interests at the French court. My book, Pleasure and Politics at the Court of France: the Artistic Patronage of Marie de Brabant (1260-1321), by reshaping the inquiry into court patronage, posits that the historical record reveals exciting and important contributions Marie de Brabant made to this burgeoning secular court. This emerging importance of the secular and redefinition of the sacred during these last decades of Capetian rule becomes all the more striking when juxtaposed to the pious tone of the lengthy reign of Louis IX (1214-1270), which had ended just four years before Marie's marriage to his son. That Marie often chose innovative materials and iconographies - that would later in the fourteenth century become the norm - to create these images signals her importance in late medieval patronage. These themes of court, culture, politics, and gender reflect and connect the chronological and methodological organization of my fully drafted manuscript. A substantial revision and expansion of my dissertation, the book examines Marie's commissions from her arrival in Paris in 1274 until her death in 1321 and analyzes the dynamics of her patronage and its impact on other women and men of the royal house.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52674800124177,"sku":"NLS9781905375684","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9781905375684.jpg?v=1762300426"},{"product_id":"epiphany-of-hieronymus-bosch-book-debra-higgs-strickland-9781909400559","title":"The Epiphany of Hieronymus Bosch","description":"This study examines medieval Christian views of non-Christians and their changing political and theological significance as revealed in late-medieval and early-modern visual culture. Taking as her point of departure Hieronymus Bosch's famous Epiphany triptych housed in the Prado Museum in Madrid, the author analyzes how representations of Jews, Saracens (later Turks), 'Ethiopians', and Mongols for centuries shaped western Christian attitudes towards salvation history, contemporary political conflicts, and the declining status of the Roman Church. She argues that Bosch's innovative pictorial warning of the coming of Antichrist and the threat posed by non-Christians gained its power and authority through intervisual references to the medieval past. Before and after Bosch, imaginative constructions that identified Jews and Turks with Gog and Magog, or the Pope with Antichrist, drew upon a long-established range of artistic and rhetorical strategies that artists and authors reconfigured as changing political circumstances demanded. Painted at a pivotal moment on the eve of the Reformation, the Prado Epiphany is a compelling lens through which to look backwards to the Middle Ages, and forwards to Martin Luther and the ideological significance of escalating Christian\/non-Christian conflicts in the formation of the new Protestant church.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52680316256529,"sku":"NLS9781909400559","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9781909400559.jpg?v=1762312818"},{"product_id":"hans-memling-book-barbara-lane-9781905375196","title":"Hans Memling","description":"Hans Memling was the leading painter in Bruges during the last quarter of the fifteenth century, receiving commissions from patrons in England, Germany and Italy as well as Flanders itself. The author Sarit Shalev-Eyni, Professor at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, provides a detailed and insightful study of the content, design, and iconography of the illustrations and decorations of a group of Ashkenahzi codices, thereby uncovering a surprising interface between Jews and Christians in the urban workshops of the time. Here, Christian artists would include midrashic components required by their Jewish instructor while drawing on the iconographic traditions of their Christian education, and artists of both religions were able to represent their own theological attitudes as well as profane tendencies and parody - in short, the various aspects of late medieval culture.A close comparison with the well-known Gradual of St. Katharinenthal, now in Zurich, and manuscripts such as the Schocken Bible, formerly in Jerusalem, and the Tripartite Mahzor -- originally bound as two volumes, but now split between Budapest, London and Oxford -- places the corpus firmly in the Lake Constance region and all but confirms the instructor to be one Hayyim, the scribe. The author's discussion of Hayyim's life and work and her historical overview of the relations between Jews and Christians in the final chapters of the book deepens our understanding of the religious and cultural dialogue between the two faiths not only in the production of this group of manuscripts but in the course of every-day life in the Middle Ages.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52680376156433,"sku":"NLS9781905375097","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9781905375097.jpg?v=1762312963"},{"product_id":"nicola-giovanni-pisano-book-anita-fiderer-moskowitz-9781872501499","title":"Nicola \u0026 Giovanni Pisano","description":"In the year 1260, Nicola Pisano, the sculptor who initiated the revival of classicizing ideals that would later form a major component of Italian Renaissance art, created a remarkable and unusual monument for the Baptistry of Pisa, a hexagonal pulpit supported by seven colorful columns and displaying on its parapet five visually compelling narrative reliefs; several years later he designed a second pulpit, this time for the cathedral of Siena. Toward the end of the century, his son Giovanni received a pulpit commission for the parish church of Sant'Andrea, Pistoia, to be followed a few years later (c. 1302) by another one for the cathedral of Pisa. These four extraordinary monuments, each building upon both older traditions and its own immediate predecessors, yet each a highly innovative and original solution, are the primary subject of this book. The pulpits by Nicola and Giovanni Pisano were produced during a period of enormous economic, intellectual, cultural and spiritual flux. The expanded body of knowledge that resulted from the rise of Scholasticism-a theological-intellectual current that, beginning in the French cathedral schools of the twelfth century, attempted to reconcile Christian faith with the newly valued ideals of observation and reason, in short, to synthesize Christian and classical learning--found expression in new themes and naturalistic motifs abounding in painting, book illumination and sculpture, and in religious and civic iconography. In contrast to the emphasis on transcendental experience of the earlier Middle Ages, the new urban-centered religious orders of the thirteenth-century, such as the Domincans and the Franciscans, fostered a more direct, empathetic relationship between ordinary mortals and God and his saints. The Pisano pulpits were profoundly informed by these new conditions and concerns, and in turn they contributed to changing perceptions about the natural world and the nature of religious experience. Indeed, these pulpits are among the earliest visual manifestations in Italy of the scholastic inclination to embrace a wide range of knowledge, for the narratives relating biblical history are augmented by representations of Virtues and Vices, Liberal Arts, and pagan prophetesses of antiquity. The sermons expounded from these and other urban pulpits were very much enhanced by the charisma of their preachers and the interplay between the verbal and the visual, both of which were expressed in the vernacular, that is, in the case of sermons no longer only in the remote Latin tongue, and in the case of visual imagery no longer employing the abstract forms and symbols of earlier periods. But preaching was by no means the sole function of these raised platforms; they were used for a variety of ceremonial occasions and, like the para-liturgical mystery and miracle plays that were becoming increasingly popular, they satisfied the needs for edification, diversion, and even entertainment, needs as compelling in the thirteenth and fourteenth centuries as they are today. In this book, we explore in word and image these and other issues related to the pulpits of Nicola and Giovanni Pisano, both as individual masterpieces and as monuments within the larger context of pulpit traditions. Nicola and Giovanni, different as were their sculptural styles, were both consummate story-tellers and it is nothing less than astonishing to observe the formal devices employed to make those stories as compelling as possible: We shall thus witness varying interpretations of the narratives, differing iconographic emphases and formal devices, changing conceptions of the human figure, and the development of spatial awareness in the work of both father and son. By offering close readings of the narrative and figural iconography, and the sculptural form conceived to give them expression, this book invites the modern viewer-reader to follow the itinerary of their original audience, the worshiper standing before and walking around each pulpit. In addition, however, numerous close-up views of passages difficult to see in situ offer privileged access to details readily visible primarily to the sculptor at work rather than the standing or circumambulating spectator.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52680491598097,"sku":"NLS9781872501499","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9781872501499.jpg?v=1762313250"},{"product_id":"books-of-hours-reconsidered-book-sandra-hindman-9781905375943","title":"Books of Hours Reconsidered","description":"For over three hunderd years, more Books of Hours were made than any other type of book, even the Bible. The project to revitalize the basilica as the center of a resurgent Church proceeded in step with the goal to reassert papal authority across the Italian peninsula, and to extend that authority to the Eastern Mediterranean by mounting a crusade to recover the Holy Land.By embedding references to the Holy Land in the fabric of the new basilica, the architecture itself became the expressive voice of the papacy's political agenda.Peter's tomb provided the fulcrum of a program to transform the basilica, and all of Rome, into a new Jerusalem.As introduced by Nicholas V (1447-1455) and refined by Julius II (1503-1513), these ideas were translated into physical form by Donato Bramante.Drawing inspiration from innovations developed elsewhere in Italy, and with heightened sensitivity for the expressive power of ancient and medieval architecture, he forged a new vocabulary that would transform the entire subsequent history of the built environment.This book is about how that process of transformation was rooted in papal ideology.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52680836579601,"sku":"NLS9781905375493","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9781905375493.jpg?v=1762314103"},{"product_id":"editio-princeps-book-eric-white-9781909400849","title":"Editio Princeps","description":"The Gutenberg Bible is widely recognized as Europe's first printed book, a book that forever changed the world. However, despite its initial impact, fame was fleeting: for the better part of three centuries the Bible was virtually forgotten; only after two centuries of tenacious and contentious scholarship did it attain its iconic status as a monument of human invention. Editio princeps: A History of the Gutenberg Bible is the first book to tell the whole story of Europe's first printed edition, describing its creation at Mainz circa 1455, its impact on fifteenth-century life and religion, its fall into oblivion during the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, and its rediscovery and rise to worldwide fame during the centuries thereafter. This comprehensive study examines the forty-nine surviving Gutenberg Bibles, and fragments of at least fourteen others, in the chronological order in which they came to light. Combining close analysis of material clues within the Bibles themselves with fresh documentary discoveries, the book reconstructs the history of each copy in unprecedented depth, from its earliest known context through every change of ownership up to the present day. Along the way it introduces the colorful cast of proud possessors, crafty booksellers, observant travelers, and scholarly librarians who shaped our understanding of Europe's first printed book. Bringing the 'biographies' of all the Gutenberg Bibles together for the first time, this richly illustrated study contextualizes both the historic cultural impact of the editio princeps and its transformation into a world treasure.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52680894710033,"sku":"NLS9781909400849","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9781909400849.jpg?v=1762314236"},{"product_id":"hugo-van-der-goes-and-the-procedures-of-art-and-salvation-book-margaret-koster-9781905375158","title":"Hugo Van Der Goes and the Procedures of Art and Salvation","description":"Hugo van der Goes is a towering figure in the history of art.Hugely original, he exerted a massive influence, pushing the portrayal of volume, motion and light to its limits while exploring an inherited Christian iconography in profoundly new ways.This book identifies the artist's painterly procedures as well as the religious practices and hopes his painting served.Focusing on Hugo's masterpiece, the Portinari Altarpiece, Koster pictures the painter, his patron, and the wider public as a set of diverse forces fuelling this artist's achievements.Painted in the Netherlands for a Florentine chapel, the altarpiece also reflects artistic exchange in the Fifteenth Century.Koster presents a ground-breaking technical examination of Hugo's triptych and for the first time, readers can access all of the evidence in a high-resolution and easily-navigable form - and for a work of supreme historical importance.But this book also studies the work's origins in the Modern Devotion movement, Hugo's personality, the machinations of a wealthy Italian donor, and the patterns of response within a church setting.Rich in information, wide-ranging in its sources, and original in its understanding of Hugo's aims, this book also places - uniquely - the tools of its analysis in the hands of specialists and general readers alike.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52680956838161,"sku":"NLS9781905375158","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9781905375158.jpg?v=1762314389"},{"product_id":"biblical-imagery-medie-eng-700-1550-book-kaufmann-9781872501048","title":"Biblical Imagery Medie Eng 700-1550","description":"This study covers the whole of the Middle Ages from the Lindisfarne Gospels to the Reformation and concentrates on the relationship Text - Image and Viewer. Within a broadly chronological framework, the treatment is thematic from the earliest carved stone crosses, through Anglo-Saxon Old Testament cycles and high medieval Psalters to the painted and carved imagery in the fifteenth-century parish church. Each section is firmly grounded in its historical context and the images are examined for their relationship with the biblical text and for the ways in which they served their patrons and viewers. Naturally enough, much of the imagery is based directly on the narrative books of the Bible but an almost equal part was inspired by commentaries interpreting the symbolism of the text and by apocryphal tales. It is from images, for example, that we know that the ox and ass were present at the Nativity, but they are not mentioned in the Gospels and their presence is derived from early biblical exegesis. As medieval writers freely admitted, the image often has a much more memorable impact than the text. To the viewer, therefore, an image could be, and often was, part of an extensive narrative cycle as well as being endowed with symbolic significance and charged with emotional power as an aid to devotion. For each period and each type of artefact, the viewer or patron is identified, often with surprising results, and his - or more often her - needs discussed. Illuminated manuscripts are the main survivors and their readership was, until the late Middle Ages, essentially clerical or aristocratic. But the same images on a monumental scale on wall paintings or in sculpture or stained glass were seen by all classes of worshippers even if some of the layers of meaning comprehensible to monks and higher clergy remained hidden to the wider lay audience.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52680991441169,"sku":"NLS9781872501048","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9781872501048.jpg?v=1762314472"},{"product_id":"saintly-brides-and-bridegrooms-book-carolyn-d-muir-9781905375875","title":"Saintly Brides and Bridegrooms","description":"Building upon recent scholarly interest in mystics and mysticism in late medieval Europe, this book explores the visual representation of female and male saints depicted as brides or bridegrooms of Christ in northern European art from 1300 to 1550. The mystic marriage imagery of St. Catherine of Alexandria, St. Agnes of Rome, St. John the Evangelist, St. Bernard of Clairvaux, and the Blessed Henry Suso is studied through an analysis of a wide range of paintings, illuminated manuscripts, prints, and sculpture. From these case studies, Muir argues that different visual conventions were used in the art of this period to portray the male and female experiences of mystic marriage and suggests possible reasons for these differences. She further considers why comparatively few mystics were visually portrayed in a mystic marriage with Christ, despite the large number recorded as having had that experience. Providing insights into the meanings of the mystical experience when portrayed in visual terms, this book will appeal to art historians as well as to other medievalists with an interest in the intersections of art, religion, and gender.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52681037218065,"sku":"NLS9781905375875","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9781905375875.jpg?v=1762314588"},{"product_id":"the-history-of-venetian-renaissance-sculpture-ca-1410-1530-book-anne-markham-schulz-9781909400733","title":"The The History of Venetian Renaissance Sculpture (Ca. 1410-1530)","description":"As the first comprehensive treatment of Venetian sculpture of the early Renaissance in nearly a century, this book examines the documents, literary sources, and oeuvre of all Venetian sculptors in stone, bronze, and wood between the decoration of the crowning of San Marco at the beginning of the fifteenth century and the artistic revolution wrought by Jacopo Sansovino from ca. 1530 on. Its text pays particular attention to the style of individual works, to their physical and artistic context, their sources and their influence, and synthesizes forty-five years of attentive looking, of research in archives and libraries of the Veneto, and hundreds of photographic campaigns throughout Italy and as far afield as Croatia and Poland - many from specially mounted scaffolds. The introduction treats general questions of material, purpose, patronage, the origin of sculptors, their workshop practices and the structure of guilds, while the conclusion considers ways in which Venetian sculpture was unique. Following the important exhibition at the National Gallery in 1992, after the cleaning of the panels, a symposium was held on all aspects of the painting itself, and on the history and arts of Richard II's time. The present volume offers the paper given on that occasion, as well as some additional contributions. The essays included in this book cover many fields. Richard II's ideas of kingship are considered by Niguel Saul; his major architectural achievement, the rebuilding of Westminster Hall, is presented by Christopher Wilson, while its sculptural embellishments, the statues of English kings, are examined, together with Richard's tomb, by Phillip Lindley. Kay Staniland asks whether the King's clothing was extravagant and Marian Campbell describes the jewellery and metalwork known to have been in his possession. Shelagh Mitchell brings out Richard II's profound devotion to the cult of saints. Celia Fisher looks at the meaning of the flowers depicted in the field of Paradise in which the Virgin and Angels are set, and the individual plants on which the White Hart is couched, and Lucy Sandler compares devotional images in contemporary manuscripts. Ashok Roy comments on the technique of the Diptych. Lisa Monnas brings examples of textiles which closely match those in which the figures in the Diptych are apparelled. Nigel Morgan assesses the 'signi fication' of the banner, and Maurice Keen considers the painting as a possible crusading icon. Jonathan Alexander analyses the famous portrait of Richard II in Westminster Abey and Pamela Tud This volume offers a collection of selected essays discussing the Wilton Diptych, a work of art with intrinsic beauty and with an evident personal link with Richard II - a king who was ever conscious of the regal image and his God-given monarchical status.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52681110814993,"sku":"NLS9781872501727","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9781872501727.jpg?v=1762314772"},{"product_id":"painting-and-patronage-in-cologne-1300-1500-book-brigitte-corley-9781872501512","title":"Painting and Patronage in Cologne, 1300-1500","description":"Cologne in the later Middle Ages was an elegant and wealthy mercantile city much favoured by popes and emperors. The largest town in Northern Europe, the site of an important university and seat of a major archbishopric, it had a cosmopolitan population of painters, illuminators, sculptors and goldsmiths and a patrician class who were sophisticated collectors and knowledgeable patrons of art. This book - the first such study in English - traces the development of the Cologne school of painting over two centuries. It begins with the period before 1400, when the adaption of French ideas to the indige- nous tradition produced an elegant, genteel art, characterized by elongated figures and graceful gestures. A change was heralded by the Veronica Master's introduction of the International Courtly Style around 1400, with its sophisticated iconography, costly pigments, exquisite punchwork, gesso jewels and precious brocade fabrics, and by the Dombild Master's introduction around 1440 of Eyckian proportions and realism. In the final phase of this development, the Master of the St Bartholomew Altarpiece opened the door to the Renaissance with his highly distinctive style and innovative iconography. The book is fully illustrated and accompanied by a translation of the guild regulations; a biographical index of archbishops and lay patrons; and a hand- list of cited panels grouped according to location.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52681151840529,"sku":"NLS9781872501512","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9781872501512.jpg?v=1762314873"},{"product_id":"jean-pucelle-book-kyunghee-pyun-9781905375462","title":"Jean Pucelle","description":"Jean Pucelle (fl. ca. 1319-d. 1334) was one of the most prominent artists of the first half of the fourteenth century, an influential illuminator who worked closely with a number of collaborators both known and anonymous. It accompanies an exhibit of some thirty diverse illuminated manuscript pages, and in a series of short descriptive essays on each of the miniatures the reader is taken on a remarkable journey from the twelfth to the sixteenth century, from which we can learn not only a great deal about the art of illumination, but also about the monasteries and cathedrals of Europe and such prominent medieval centres as the cities of London, Florence, Paris and Nuremberg. Moreover, Christopher de Hamel's wide knowledge and vivid reflections provide the historical and cultural context that help us to fully understand and truly appreciate these special works of art. The illuminated pages presented here are part of the impressive and broad-ranging collection assembled over twenty-five years by the medieval scholar and long-time Chicagoan Sandra Hindman. They represent both biblical and secular subjects and include the work of master illuminators such as Maestro Daddesco, Giovanni di Paolo and the Master of Mary of Burgundy. In addition to the colour reproductions of all the exhibited pages, the essays are sumptously illustrated with further related and comparative images, many of which are drawn from the collections of the Chicago Institute of Art itself. The Master of the Berlin Passion played a pivotal role in the printmaking industry of the Lower Rhine during this period. He, together with the engravers working in his ambit, specifically targeted their prints at the growing market for illustrated devotional manuscripts, doing so to an extent unparalleled by engravers elsewhere in Europe. As a result, experimental hybrid books combining manuscript and engraving were a phenomenon that flourished particularly in the Rhine-Maas region during the fifteenth century. The first part of this book deals with the production of engravings and metalcuts for the manuscript market, concentrating specifically on the Master of the Berlin Passion and the engravers and metalcutters in his circle. The motives of these printmakers related to broader cultural and social changes during the latter half of the fifteenth century. These were critical years of transition in methods of book production as printmakers and manuscript-makers across Europe strove to exploit the potential of new print technology combined with traditional craft skills. The second part of the book concentrates on the public for whom these printmakers worked. Prints that were pasted, bound or sewn into contemporary manuscripts, and which still remain in position, provide an unparalled opportunity to study the audiences of engravings and metalcuts. The vast majority of fifteenth-century prints no longer survive, and most of those that do are divorced from the original contexts in which they were used. These manuscripts thus provide an invaluable insight into the production, reception, circulation, meanings and functions of prints in the Rhine-Maas region at this time. The predominantly female ownership of Rhine-Maas manuscripts with inserted engravings is a major theme of the book. Most of the manuscripts discussed are vernacular prayerbooks or Books of Hours that belonged either to nuns or to members of the lay female gentry in the Low Countries. In many cases the books can be linked to the pietistic reform movement of the Devotio Moderna suggesting that, as in other areas of Northern Europe, there was a link between the use of prints and movements of monastic reform. This book contributes to our understanding of an important circle of print artists and their public; early uses of printing during the period of transition from manuscript to print; the functions of, and aesthetic attitudes towards, engravings in the fifteenth century and the role of engravings in religious devotion prior to the Reformation, particularly among women.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52681543876881,"sku":"NLS9781872501529","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9781872501529.jpg?v=1762315921"},{"product_id":"renaissance-wedding-book-jane-bridgeman-9781905375936","title":"A Renaissance Wedding","description":"This publication is the first English translation from the Italian of the fascinating contemporary account of the spectacular four-day celebrations that took place in Pesaro in May 1475 to mark the marriage of Costanzo Sforza Lord of Pesaro and Camilla d'Aragona of Naples. The event was commemorated both in manuscript and early print in an anonymous narration that describes in great detail the arrival of the bride and her welcome procession into Pesaro; the actual marriage ceremony and the celebratory banquet that followed; the pageants, presentation of gifts and fireworks that filled the third day; and the final day's excitement of jousts and yet more theatrical entertainment. The translation has been made from the early printed text (the incunable in the British Library, I.A.31753 Sforza, Costantio Signore di Pesaro, 1475) and also directly from the unique illustrated presentation manuscript in the Vatican Library (MS Vat. Urb. Lat. 899) which, though previously thought to have been produced in 1480, may in fact have been made at the same time as the incunable edition. It is not known for whom the printed books were intended (7 copies only survive), but it is likely that the prominent dignitaries among the 108 guests - who included Federico da Montefeltro, the groom's brother-in-law - would have been the recipients of the account when it was printed in November 1475.This present edition of the text includes all the images that illustrate the original manuscript - 32 full-page miniatures that depict the floats that welcomed the bride at the city gates of Pesaro; the costumed figures at the wedding banquet who represented the presiding Sun and Moon or the male and female messengers of the classical gods and goddesses who announcedthe exotic dishes of the 12-course banquet; and further colourful, unusually interesting illustrations of the ballets, fireworks and triumphs of the final two days of the celebrations. In addition to the Introduction that provides the reader with the historical background and biographical details of the protagonists and personalities of this special occasion, Dr. Bridgeman also adds helpful and highly informative annotations to the narration itself. In addition she provides full descriptions and explanations of the illustrations - all reproduced here in colour - and devotes a separate appendix to listing and explaining all the dishes served at the wedding banquet, together with their ingredients and recipes.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52681561964817,"sku":"NLS9781905375936","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9781905375936.jpg?v=1762315962"},{"product_id":"ottonian-book-illumination-book-henry-mayr-harting-9781872501741","title":"Ottonian Book Illumination","description":"The seminal work, originally published in two seperate clothbound volumes, is now made available in a revised one-volume edition, both in hardback and in paperback. This is the first extensive study of these famous picture books in English. Using critical frameworks based on performative and feminist theory, the authors give detailed consideration to the social differences reshaped and maintained by text and image. Although Eike'sproject, realized in the early 1220s, was concerned with peaceful interaction between diverse groups, including Slavic Wends as well as Germans, and with the provision of guardians for the young, the handicapped and the judicially impaired, his text is open to subversion by the images. Changing emphases in the pictures accord with changing attitudes to women and Jews in the period of production of these works, between c. 1300 and 1360. A burgeoning book culture in the fourteenth century carried Eike's law into the town halls at a time when the German cities were increasingly Christianized; market churches were constructed in the judicial and economic hub even as Synagogues disappeared from town centres during the pogroms. The market complex became part of the material culture of the law.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52681607184657,"sku":"NLS9781909400498","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9781909400498.jpg?v=1762316083"},{"product_id":"mermaids-of-venice-book-alison-luchs-9781905375455","title":"The Mermaids of Venice","description":"The arts of Renaissance Venice teem with sea monsters. Chief among these are mermaids and mermen--graceful hybrid beings human from the waist up, but with the lower body and tail of a fish, dolphin or sea serpent. Other sea hybrids--horses, bulls,panthers, even an elephant--also swim through Venetian art in finned and fish-tailed forms.Such creatures emerge from stone in the shadowy churches and the sunlit courtyard of the Palazzo Ducale, crown the wooden frame of a Giovanni Bellini altarpiece, and encircle the bronze flagpole bases in Piazza San Marco. Their gilded sugar apparitions graced banquet tables for illustrious visitors, and their descendents still glide through the canals in the form of brass seahorses set above the sides of gondolas This book focuses on the conceptions of artists who made marine hybrids as some of the most engaging inventions of the Renaissance in Venice and its subject city Padua. The chapters deal with five functional contexts: book decoration of the 1470s and 80s; tomb monuments of the 1480s and 90s; church decoration of the same years, particularly at Santa Maria dei Miracoli; centers of political activity, including civic settings in Venice and the palaces of powerful mainland employers of Venetian artists; and finally, private homes, where owners could hold small bronze sea hybrids in their hands, often as objects for use. A prologue introduces the heritage of monsters from the ancient and medieval worlds, the better to show how Venetian artists adapted these to new purposes. Exploring the ways in which artists could interpret and contemporary viewers might experience these wide-ranging sea-creatures, the book brings their best images together as a source of delight.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52681660825873,"sku":"NLS9781905375455","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9781905375455.jpg?v=1762316225"}],"url":"https:\/\/www.worldofbooks.com\/en-au\/collections\/studies-in-medieval-and-early-renaissance-art-history-ser-book-series.oembed","provider":"World of Books ","version":"1.0","type":"link"}
