Its construction has been accompanied by a major dredging scheme that has increased the depth of sections of the approach channel over a length of c. 100km, from the outer reaches of the Thames to the new terminal. From its beginning, this scheme included careful consideration of the archaeological consequences of dredging in such a historically-important estuary. Over the course of a decade, investigations by Wessex Archaeology have provided a new perspective on the historic environment of the Thames, and explored innovative archaeological approaches and methodologies for addressing marine developments of this type and scale. This volume sets out the challenges, results and history of these investigations, and the context and constraints encountered. The results contribute to our knowledge of maritime archaeology in the Thames Estuary and to the wider practice of marine development-led archaeology. A companion volume on the terrestrial investigations conducted by Oxford Archaeology is presented in London Gateway: Iron Age and Roman Salt Making in the Thames Estuary. Excavations at Stanford Wharf Nature Reserve, Essex.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":49596891300113,"sku":"GOR010001588","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/1874350612.jpg?v=1750725858"},{"product_id":"by-river-fields-and-factories-book-andrew-b-powell-9781874350590","title":"By River, Fields and Factories","description":"Excavations and built heritage recording on the site of the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games have revealed evidence dating from the last Ice Age up to the modern period. Extensive geoarchaeological and palaeo-environmenal studies, coupled with a comprehensive radiocarbon dating programme, have enabled the valley's past environments to be reconstructed. As well as significant Neolithic finds, the excavations revealed Bronze Age and Iron Age settlements, and some evidence for Roman, Saxon and medieval activity. Aspects of post-medieval industry are examined, as are features relating to Victorian infrastructure developments and the rapid industrialisation of the lower Lea Valley.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ WELL_READ \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":49646573715729,"sku":"GOR012455828","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/1874350590.jpg?v=1750803284"},{"product_id":"prehistoric-and-roman-sites-in-east-devon-book-a-p-fitzpatrick-9781874350316","title":"Prehistoric and Roman Sites in East Devon","description":null,"brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":49661636575505,"sku":"GOR007894440","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/1874350310.jpg?v=1750834711"},{"product_id":"amesbury-archer-and-the-boscombe-bowmen-book-a-p-fitzpatrick-9781874350620","title":"The Amesbury Archer and the Boscombe Bowmen","description":"Found a few kilometres from Stonehenge, the graves of the Amesbury Archer and the Boscombe Bowmen date to the 24th century BC and are two of the earliest Bell Beaker graves in Britain. The Boscombe Bowmen is a collective burial and the Amesbury Archer is a single burial but isotope analyses suggest that both were the graves of incomers to Wessex. The objects placed in both graves have strong continental connections and the metalworking tool found in the grave of the Amesbury Archer may explain why his mourners afforded him one of the most well-furnished burials yet found in Europe. This excavation report contains a series of wide-ranging studies and scientific analyses by an array of experts and a discussion of the graves within their British and continental European contexts.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ -","offer_id":50643881558289,"sku":"","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":50643881885969,"sku":"GOR010048608","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/1874350620.jpg?v=1751347192"}],"url":"https:\/\/www.worldofbooks.com\/en-au\/collections\/wessex-archaeology-reports-book-series.oembed","provider":"World of Books ","version":"1.0","type":"link"}
