It was first published in 1818 in an edition by the antiquarian William Bray; this three-volume version of 1906 was edited by Austin Dobson (1840-1921), the author and poet who also wrote the volume on Henry Fielding in the 'English Men of Letters' series, among many other literary biographies. In an extensive preface, Dobson explains his reasons for revisiting a work which had already received much editorial attention, and his introduction gives a short biography of its author. The work begins with Evelyn's own memoir of his early life: regular entries commence in 1637, when he was a student at Oxford, and conclude a few weeks before his death in 1706.
An annotated edition of Falkner's novel. It describes the beginnings of a fictional third Jacobite Rebellion, and includes Wandering Willie's Tale, a famous short story which frequently appears in anthologies.

The novel's hero is a young man named Darsie Latimer. Early in the novel he is kidnapped by Hugh Redgauntlet, and taken to a village in Dumfriesshire. Darsie's friend Alan Fairford sets out to rescue him. After much intrigue Darsie discovers that Redgauntlet is his uncle, and he is also reunited with his sister. He also discovers that a number of prominent Jacobites, and Prince Charles Edward Stuart (Bonnie Prince Charlie or the Young Pretender) himself are staying in the village. Redgauntlet has summoned them all to start a new Jacobite rebellion, and he wants Darsie to join them. However, the Prince is still reeling from the French naval defeats at Quiberon Bay and Lagos, which represented Charles's last realistic chance to recover the British throne for the Stuart dynasty. Furthermore, Redgauntlet discovers that his fellow Jacobites are not as committed as he, and their stated objection is that they suspect the Prince's mistress, Clementina Walkinshaw, of being a spy. During these discussions, General Campbell arrives amongst them to announce that he and the government know what the conspirators are up to. The Prince is allowed to go into exile, and his followers peacefully disperse. Redgauntlet, seeing that the Jacobite cause is now lost, joins the Prince in exile. Darsie is set free having always remained loyal to the current king, and Alan marries Darsie's sister. In 1867 Trollope left his position in the British Post Office to run for Parliament as a Liberal candidate in 1868. After he lost, he concentrated entirely on his literary career. While continuing to produce novels rapidly, he also edited the St Paul's Magazine, which published several of his novels in serial form. His first major success came with The Warden (1855) - the first of six novels set in the fictional county of Barsetshire. The comic masterpiece Barchester Towers (1857) has probably become the best-known of these. Trollope's popularity and critical success diminished in his later years, but he continued to write prolifically, and some of his later novels have acquired a good reputation. In particular, critics generally acknowledge the sweeping satire The Way We Live Now (1875) as his masterpiece. In all, Trollope wrote forty-seven novels, as well as dozens of short stories and a few books on travel.
At the centre of this chronicle of Russian provincial life in the reign of Catherine the Great stands the patriarchal figure of the author's grandfather, Stepan Mikhailovich. A man of great natural dignity, imbued with respect for tradition and love of the land, he is also despotic and virtually illiterate. Into the family comes his son's new wife, a spirited, intelligent girl from the town. Her eyes see a different world, tainted by grossness, cruelty, and squalor: she suffers from the hostility of jealous sisters-in-law and the shortcomings of a husband whom she loves but cannot respect. Her relationship with Stepan Mikhailovich is the heart of Aksakov's story, in which with great narrative skill and psychological insight he celebrates the old feudal way of life without concealing its darker, repressive side. This book is intended for general readers; students of Russian literature from A-level upwards.
This is a sentimental romance with a Gothic setting, written in 1793 by Charlotte Smith, a poet and novelist who wrote to support her eight children. It is a complex story concerning Orlando, a second son, who must enter the military service for a living while his older brother wastes the family's small fortune. Orlando has a slight hope of an inheritance from a distant relative, the last owner of the Manor House, whose sinister housekeeper maintains her orphaned niece, one of Orlando's childhood friends. Around these two disinherited young people there is woven a plot of midnight meetings in a haunted house, banquets, smugglers, elopements, a missing will and the hero's adventures overseas during the American war of Independence. The novel attacks the injustice of the English inheritance system of the 1770s and the evils of war and slavery.

Homer's great epic The Odyssey--one of Western literature's most enduring and important works--translated by Richmond Lattimore

A splendid achievement. . . the best translation there is of a great, perhaps the greatest, poet. -- New York Times Book Review

A classic for the ages, The Odyssey recounts Odysseus' journey home after the Trojan War--and the obstacles he faces along the way to reclaim his throne, kingdom, and family in Ithaca.

During his absence, his steadfast and clever wife, Penelope, and now teenaged son, Telemachus, have lived under the constant threat of ruthless suitors, all desperate to court Penelope and claim the throne. In combining certain of the restrictions of poetic form with the freedom of prose, he sought a form of language capable of conveying the complexity, cacophony, and unexpected juxtapositions of city life. Like his verse, the prose poems are rich in psychological insights and reveal the ability both to select precisely those tiny details that raise the banal to the ironic and to create verbal patterns and rhythms that subtly underpin or throw into question the surface meaning of the language. This collection of all Baudelaire's prose poetry also includes the novella La Fanfarlo , a gently mocking study of love and passion that brilliantly evokes the art of dance. This novel, his last major work, is dominated by the figure of John Scarborough, a wealthy squire who contrives from his deathbed to defeat the law of entail. Seeking to bequeath his estate to the worthier of his two sons, he subjects them to a testing examination and, in the process, baffles his lawyers and scandalizes society. The social world also comes under scrutiny as Trollope explores the codes of conduct governing courtship and marriage, money-lending, gambling and other subjects as he records the conflict between law and justice, and the passing of traditional values. He wrote penetrating novels on political, social, and gender issues and conflicts of his day.

This work has been selected by scholars as being culturally important and is part of the knowledge base of civilization as we know it.

This work is in the public domain in the United States of America, and possibly other nations. Published in 1852, it is set in the England of the later Stuarts, when political and religious feelings ran high. Its eponymous hero, enamoured of the Jacobite Lady Castlewood and her wayward daughter Beatrix, distinguishes himself in Marlborough's campaigns against Louis XIV, but comes to grief in an ingenious but ultimately unsuccessful attempt to depose George I in favour of the Old Pretender. This edition uses the Oxford Thackeray text of 1908, which includes the emendations of the 1858 edition.
Focusing on Jennie Gerhardt, a poor young girl in Columbus, Ohio, Theodore Dreiser's novel depicts her inadvertently defying a host of conventions - of class, gender, family, and religion. Over a quarter of a century she is repeatedly victimized by circumstance, temperament, and most particularly by the fact of her sex. Yet the triumph of the book lies in her incorrigibly loving nature. Cast out by society as well as by her family, she none the less fosters a far deeper understanding of relationships that anyone else. Exploring the dynamic forces in modern life that strip away the right to control one's fate, this powerful novel confirmed Dreiser's reputation as America's premier naturalist writer as the beginning of the twentieth century. This book is intended for general; students from the sixth-form upwards following courses on world literature, American literature, American studies, and the novel.
The spirit of the Mississippi flows through all Mark Twain's best work and here the romantic heyday of the steamboat is recalled in a characteristically nostalgic mixture of journalism and autobiography. This is one of the enduringly fascinating problems posed in The Prime Minister (1876). And as Plantaganet Palliser, Duke of Omnium, overenthusiastically supported by Lady Glencora, presides over the Coalition government, Trollope reaches into the highest echelons of the English establishment, depicting political realities rather than ideology, portraying social, sexual and domestic politics as well as the public variety. The world of the novel is perplexed and dominated by the handsome impostor Ferdinand Lopez. Even the Duke and Duchess are not immune to his malign influence, as Lopez pursues Emily Wharton for her charm and her fortune, and plots to win membership of that most exclusive of English clubs, the Houses of Parliament.
Jean Racine (1639-99) remains to this day the greatest of French poetic dramatists. Britannicus (1669), the first play in this volume, takes its themes from Roman history: the setting is the bloody and treacherous court of the Emperor Nero. Phaedra (1677) dramatizes the Greek myth of Phaedra's doomed love for her stepson Hippolytus. Athaliah (1691), Racine's last and perhaps finest play, draws on the Old Testament story of Athaliah, Queen of Judah and worshipper of Baal, who is threatened and finally forced to concede victory to Joash, a son of the house of David and survivor of Athaliah's massacres. Racine's tragedies portray characters wrestling with ambition, treachery, religion, and love. In this translation, specially commissioned for The World's Classics series, C.H. Sisson has captured the lucidity of Racine's language, both analytic and passionate, and the rhythm of his four-part Alexandrine.
A collection of Anton Chekhov's short stories in which he emphasizes his distaste for social conflict and the iniquities of class structure.
