Dans l'Hippias mineur, Platon fait intervenir Socrate sur l'un des terrains de predilection de la sophistique: l'exegese d'Homere. Ulysse, le heros a double face, est un menteur ruse. Socrate le prend pour exemple et interroge sur son compte le sophiste Hippias: qu'est-ce qui permet a quelqu'un de dire le faux, de mentir et de tromper? Celui qui ment et trompe ne doit-il pas son aptitude, sa puissance, a la connaissance de la verite qu'il contrefait volontairement? C'est la question, ethique, de l'Hippias mineur: n'est-ce pas celui qui connait le bien qui est le plus susceptible de faire le mal? Platon repond par la negative, pour discrediter la confusion des arguments ethiques sophistiques et mettre en cause la pertinence des modeles homeriques.
