Wassily Kandinsky (1866 – 1944) was one of the most important artists of the twentieth century. Born in Moscow, he studied law and economics before deciding to study art at age 30. He founded the Blue Rider group of painters, published theories of art and taught at schools including the Bauhaus in Weimar. In his own art, instead of copying reality, he used colours and shapes to create meaning, and is widely considered to have created the world's first abstract painting. Before the Second World War, 57 of Kandinsky's paintings were confiscated by the Nazis in the 1937 purge of 'degenerate art'. Kandinsky died on December 13, 1944, in Neuilly, France.
