Beginning Organic Chemistry 1 by Graham Patrick

The first of two workbooks through which students entering first year university courses can gain confidence in organic chemistry, this text will also be of use in A-level courses, and Higher and Sixth Year Study Courses in Chemistry. Designed to challenge the student to test his or her knowledge, each section leads the student through the subject matter by giving a short piece of theory, followed by a question. Space is then provided for the student's answer and the full model answer is given - encouraging thought about what is being read at all times. Areas covered include drawing structures, functional groups and formulae and molecular weights. Later sections covering such aspects as isomers, non equivalent carbon and hydrogen atoms, and stereochemistry will be relevant to most parts of University courses in organic chemistry and are necessary pre-requisites before effective progress can be made to Beginning Organic Chemistry 2 - Workbook.

Graham Patrick is Lecturer in Organic Chemistry and Medicinal Chemistry at the University of the West of Scotland.

Dr. Graham Patrick gained his BSc Honours at Glasgow University, winning the McKay-Smith Prize for Chemistry. He completed his PhD with Professor Kirby and Professor Robins studying the biosynthesis of gliotoxin and related fungal metabolites. Following this, he worked in the pharmaceutical industry
as a research chemist and radiochemist on a variety of projects that included topic areas such as opioids, antibacterial agents and antidepressants.

His academic career has included positions at Leeds and Strathclyde Universities as well as the Australian National University. He joined the University of Paisley (now the University of the West of Scotland) in 1990, teaching medicinal chemistry and drug design.
