His mother, Mabel, is the daughter of Gregorio Maranon, a doctor and writer, and his father, Tom Burns, was a publisher, journalist, and diplomat who died in 1994. He has contributed to numerous other media organizations around the world over the years, including the BBC, CNN, National Public Radio, and Fox News, as a senior writer for the Financial Times. He has received newspaper honors as an investigative reporter and, with his debut book, the famous Somerset Maughan Award for nonfiction.
