'The Breathing Earth is incredibly touching and I loved reading itThe sorrows and celebrations are most movingly handled: many odd phrases snag and remain in the mind, like burrs. The wisdom and philosophy in David Austin's poetry is both thought-provoking and comforting, and his passion for the natural world shines through.' Joanna Lumley
David Austin was born in 1926, the son of a Shropshire farmer. He was educated at Shrewsbury School, where he failed to distinguish himself. In spite of this he was influenced by one teacher in particular, who instilled in him a love of poetry that he never lost. On leaving school, he worked on his father's farm at first and later on his own account. During this time he was deeply influenced by the beauty of the Shropshire countryside, a fact that is evident in much of his poetry. From his schooldays onwards he also had an interest in horticulture and worked on the breeding of an entirely new race of garden roses, now known as the 'English Roses', starting his own Nursery in 1970. His roses are now grown and enjoyed in almost every developed country of the world and it is for these that he is most famous today. While all this was happening he was also writing poetry, a selection of which is to be found in this book. Many of the poems are deceptively simple, often carrying a deeper message beneath their surface concerning questions that have occupied his mind over the years.
