Circling the Core by Myra Schneider

Myra Schneider s new collection opens with a sequence inspired by one of Barbara Hepworth s sculptures and explores the idea of core from different angles. This theme recurs throughout as Schneider tries to capture the sense of what a bird is, searches out what lies at the heart of memories, fraught contemporary situations, ancient places and dream visions. The same need to investigate underlies poems about women s experience. These include a narrative, Hotel, and a monologue, Eurydice s Version, which reinterpets the Orpheus myth.
'An important poet: compassionate, richly sensuous, and with a tactfully impressive delicacy of technique' Grevel Lindop 'Myra Schneider's poems are typically low key but rich with delays. And often these delays are really arrivals, intricately discovered, alight all over the room. She's not merely promising, she has herself arrived, and delivers.' Les Murray
Myra Schneider spent most of her childhood on the Firth of Clyde, lived in Chichester during her teens and has lived in London since she went to University. She is the author of four poetry collections by Littlewood Press, three novels for children and teenagers by Heinemann and six collections by Enitharmon Press: Exits (1994), The Panic Bird (1998), Insisting on Yellow (2000), Multiplying The Moon (2004), Circling The Core (2008) and The Door to Colour (2014). Her poem Goulash from this book was shortlisted for the Forward Prize for Best Single Poem, 2007. Second Light Publications published her long narrative poem, Becoming in 2007. Writing for Self-Discovery co-written with John Killick was published by Element Books in 1997. Writing My Way Through Cancer, her fleshed-out diary with poem notes, poems and therapeutic writing ideas was published by Jessica Kingsley in 2003. Writing Your Self, a resource book of personal writing co-written with John Killick was published by Continuum International in 2009. Myra has co-edited four anthologies of poetry by contemporary women poets. She is an experienced writing tutor and works as a core tutor for The Poetry School.
