Circuits of Sound by Yi Wei Chew
Chew Yi Wei explores the new cognitive, sensorial, embodied, and affective experiences presented by the rise of postdigital storytelling-and-listening.
As the COVID-19 pandemic - and the lockdowns that followed, such as the 54-day "Circuit Breaker" in Singapore - necessitated new ways of being in public and private spaces, cultural production shifted in turn. No longer able to create shared in-person experiences, creators turned to digital programming, ushering in a proliferation of online experiences including theatre, dance performances, and concerts. Among the most prominent of these were productions made solely for listening - podcasts, audio dramas, audio documentaries, and guided audio walks.
Using the postdigital as a guiding theoretical framework, Chew employs autoethnography as research methodology and praxis to examine her own experience of listening to mobile audio performances during the pandemic. In exploring what these performances mean, she proposes a heuristic for approaching close textual analysis of mobile audio.
