In 1975, Mark Schilling traveled to Japan with the intention of immersing himself in the culture, learning the language, and haunting the theaters. Since then, he's been there. He began reviewing Japanese films for the Japan Times in 1989 and has since written for a number of other publications, including Screen International, Premier Japan, Asian Newsweek, Asian Wall Street Journal, Japan Quarterly, Winds, Cinemaya, and Kinema Jumpo.
