The Cosmopolitan World of Jesus by Carsten Peter Thiede

A portrayal of the daily life of real people in the world of Jesus and his time This book portrays the cultural, economic and religious life of real people in the real world of Jesus and his time. Palestine was not a backwater, but a highly cultivated part of the Roman empire with theatre, literature, postal services, library systems and commerce. The author presents an entirely different picture to the popular conception of a provincial world in the back of beyond to give us a better understanding of the context from which the message of Jesus was spread.
Carsten Peter Thiede is Professor of NT History (with Archaeology and Papyrology) in Basel, Switzerland, lectures on the Dead Sea Scrolls at the Ben Gurion University, and directs damage detection research of the Dead Sea Scrolls on behalf of the Israel Antiquities Authority, Jerusalem. He was recently seen on British TV in Quest for the True Cross on Channel 4. His English books include the best-selling The Jesus Papyrus and The Quest for the True Cross (both Weidenfield and Nicholson) and The Dead Sea Scrolls and the Jewish Origins of Christianity (Lion). The author lives in Germany.
