Gregory went to local schools, including the Upper Arroyo Grande Valley's two-room Branch School, Cuesta College, the University of Missouri, where he earned a history degree, and Cal Poly, where he earned his teaching license. He spent thirty years as a teacher at San Luis Obispo's Mission Prep and Arroyo Grande High School. He was Lucia Mar's Teacher of the Year in 2010-11, and after retiring in 2015, he began writing. Gregory is married to Elizabeth, who works as a campus chaplain and a teacher at St. John's University. Joseph is a Santa Maria High School graduate and the father of two kids, John and Thomas.
