Dark Days by John Darwell

In February 2001 Foot & Mouth disease arrived in Cumbria. At its peak Cumbria was the worst affected county in Britain with a staggering 41% of all cases. For the local community the environmental and social consequences were to prove devastating. As a local resident, leading UK photographer John Darwell found himself surrounded by the effects of the disease. Over 12 months he committed to visual memory what was taking place.

Liz Wells, curator and writer, is Professor of Photography Culture at the University of Plymouth's College of Arts and Humanities. She co-edits photographies and edited Photography: A Critical Introduction (5th ed., 2015). Land Matters: Landscape Photography, Culture, and Identity (2011) is a book about landscape. She is the editor of the Photography, Place, and Environment series.
