Street Sleeper was a finalist for the Yorkshire Post First Work Award, Bleeding London was a Whitbread Prize finalist, and Bedlam Burning was named a New York Times Novel Review Noteworthy Book of the Year. Sex Collectors and The Lost Art of Walking are two of his nonfiction books, and his journalism has featured in The New York Times, Bookforum, Gastronomica, ArtReview, Black Clock, The Believer, McSweeney's, The Los Angeles Times, and Custom Car, among other magazines. He contributes to the Los Angeles Review of Books as a contributing editor. He was born in the English city of Sheffield and now resides in Los Angeles.
