Death of a Queen by Christopher St John Sprigg
The 4th story of amateur detective journalist Charles Venables, set in an eastern Balkan country Iconia. Charles is sent to investigate murder and intrigue in the court of the strong-willed and bad-tempered Queen Hanna.Dorothy LSayers reviewed it for the Sunday Times, stating ‘Mr. Sprigg strikes exactly the right note for this kind of extravaganza; with enough gentle humour to make the absurdities of his one-horse kingdom entertaining and enough romantic glamour to keep the murders in key.’
Christopher St John Sprigg (1907-1937) was a witty and prolific writer who also published non-fiction under the pseudonym Christopher Caudwell. Sprigg wrote seven crime novels between 1933 and his death February 1937 during the Spanish Civil War. Other books featuring sleuth Charles Venables are also available from Moonstone Press.
