The Descartes Highlands by Eric Gamalinda

Two men, each unaware of the other, share a secret: they were sold for adoption by their American father after birth in the Philippines. In The Descartes Highlands, three alternating stories interweave the experiences of Andrew Breszky and the two sons who try to connect and piece together the puzzle of their reckless, impulsive father. Both will discover that their relationships echo that of the man whose history eludes them. Celebrated Filipino writer Eric Gamalinda's international debut is a contemporary work combining mystery, film noir and philosophy.

Eric Gamalinda was born and raised in Manila, where he worked as an editor and journalist and wrote three novels, a collection of short tales, and a collection of poems. His work has appeared in a variety of magazines, including Harper's Magazine, Frank, and Hootenanny, as well as in various anthologies, including In My Life: Encounters with the Beatles, Returning to a Borrowed Language, Brown River, White Ocean, and Flippin': Filipinos on America, which he co-edited. The Philippine Centennial Prize for Literature was given to his novel My Sad Republic. ZERO GRAVITY (Alice James Books, 1999) is his poetry collection, and PEOPLE ARE STRANGE (Black Lawrence Press, 2012) is his short story collection. He currently resides in New York City.
