Devi by Vidya Dehejia
This is a publication which accompanies the first major exhibition ever held on India's cultural and religious contrasts, documents artifacts from 36 different collections in the United States, England and Switzerland, which originally come from sites in India, Nepal, Tibet, Pakistan, Sri Lanka and China dating from 100 BC to the present day. Through over a hundred diverse examples of Devi's images and a collection of essays many facets of Devi worship and tradition are explored, including ritual, architectuire, literature, history and contemporary issues such as feminism anmd gender politics.
At Columbia University, Vidya Dehejia holds the Barbara Stoler Miller Chair in Indian Art. She worked at the Freer Gallery of Art and the Arthur M. Sackler Gallery as head curator and deputy director, as well as interim director. Washington, D.C.'s Sackler Gallery She is a well-known academic whose work has covered everything from early Buddhist art to North Indian esoteric temples, as well as holy bronzes and colonial India art. Chola: Bronzes from South India, India Through the Lens: Photography, 1840-1911, Devi: The Great Goddess, and Pleasure in Design: Indian Silver for the Raj are some of her most recent publications.
