Michael Hardwick graduated from UCSB with a bachelor's degree in anthropology. As a park ranger, he completed early archaeology on the Santa Barbara presidio and founded the archives at La Purisima State Park. Hardwick is currently an honorary life trustee of the Santa Barbara Trust for Historic Preservation after serving on its board of directors for seventeen years. The Huerta Project at Old Mission Santa Barbara was inspired by his first book on the horticulture of California's missions.
