He is the author of books and essays about American poetry and fiction. He formerly worked at the University of Pennsylvania as the chairman of the English department and dean of arts and sciences, as well as the executive director of the Modern Language Association. He holds degrees from Davidson College, Cornell University, and New York University, as well as honorary doctorates from a number of other universities.
