In March 1871 the first international match took place between England and Scotland at Raeburn Place in Edinburgh. Donned in all white the fledgling England team lost that day 0-1 but it was the start of remarkable history. He is the author of numerous books on rugby history, including Doing their Duty (2017) a history of rugby's role in WWI. He is currently the head curator at the World Rugby Museum, located in Twickenham stadium, which houses the largest collection of rugby memorabilia in the world
