Essays on Bentham by H L A Hart

In his introduction to these closely linked essays Professor Hart offers both an exposition and a critical assessment of some central issues in jurisprudence and political theory. Some of the essays touch on themes to which little attention has been paid, such as Bentham's identification of the forms of mysitification protecting the law from criticism; his relation to Beccaria; and his conversion to democratic radicalism and a passionate admiration for the United States.

H.L.A., the late H.L.A. From 1952 to 1968, Hart was Professor of Jurisprudence at the University of Oxford. He went on to become the Principal of Oxford's Brasenose College. John Gardner has been Professor of Jurisprudence at the University of Oxford since 2000. His other important writings are Causation in the Law (with Tony Honoré, OUP 1959), The Idea of Law (OUP 1961), and Law, Liberty, and Morality (OUP 1963). He has taught at King's College London, Yale Law School, Columbia Law School, and the University of Texas. He is a former Fellow of All Souls and Brasenose Colleges at Oxford. OUP will publish his book Offenses and Defenses in the near future.
