Feltmaking: Traditions, Techniques, and Contemporary Explorations by Beverly Gordon

Max is a 13-year-old math whiz who spends his free time working on equations, scientific experiments, and designing a secret project of his own. When his genius earns him early entry into a prestigious college, his mother fears that childhood is passing him by.

Afraid he will become even more anti-social, Max's mother rents a lake house and takes the family on a summer vacation. While Max does make some friends his own age at the lake, he also befriends Sandy, a mysterious burned-out middle-aged scientist who takes a great interest in Max.

While Max's mother is concerned about Sandy's intentions, the seemingly clairvoyant scientist helps Max with some math equations and problems, including the big question: how does he befriend Amanda, a girl at the lake that he has a crush on?

Beverly Gordon is a professor in the Environment, Textiles, and Design Department and serves the folklore and women's studies programs at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. She is the author of several books, including Shaker Textile Arts and American Indian Art: The Collecting Experience.
