Frank O.Braynard (1916-2007) was a New York Herald Tribune maritime reporter, curator of the American Merchant Marine Museum, and director of the South Street Seaport Museum in New York. In 1964, he created the inaugural Operation Sail, and in 1976, he established OpSail '76 to commemorate America's 200th birthday. Braynard was a graduate of Duke University and the recipient of numerous major maritime honors. He also held positions at the American Merchant Marine Institute, the Steamship Historical Society of America, and the Council of American Master Mariners.
