The Flower Master by Medbh Mcguckian
Rei Shimura, a California girl living in Tokyo, has an antiques business that's only slightly more successful than her love life. When her aunt enrolls her in the Kayama School of Ikebana to learn how to arrange flowers, disaster strikes. A mean teacher is found with scissors in her neck, and Takeo Kayama, the sexy billionaire heir to the school, considers Rei's aunt the main suspect. Rei strives to prove her aunt's innocence but becomes enmeshed in a web of upper-class ladies, edgy environmental protesters, and young immigrants trying to make it in one of the world's most exciting and expensive cities. As danger rises, clues are sent to Rei in haiku poems that hint her family played a role in an old Kayama School tragedy that threatens not just her romantic future with Takeo--but her own life.-

Medbh McGuckian was born in Belfast, Northern Ireland, in 1950, and presently resides there with her husband and four children. She earned a BA and an MA from Queen's University, where she studied under Seamus Heaney with Paul Muldoon. She came back to Queen's in 1985 as the university's first female writer-in-residence. She has also done residencies at the University of Ulster, Trinity College, Dublin, and universities in the United States. Medbh McGuckian's first two chapbooks were published in 1980, and her first full-length collection, The Flower Master (1982), won the Alice Hunt Bartlett Award from the Poetry Society, as well as the Rooney Prize for Irish Writing and an award from the Ireland Arts Council.
McGuckian's eleven works have been published by Wake Forest University Press, beginning with On Ballycastle Beach (1988), which won the Cheltenham Award. The distinguished Eric Gregory Award, the Denis Devlin Award, the Bass Ireland Award for Literature, the American Ireland Fund's Literary Award, and the 2002 Forward Prize for Best Poem, honoring She Is in the Past, She Has This Grace, are among her other accolades. Medbh McGuckian co-translated Nuala N Dhomhnaill's collection The Water Horse (2000) with Eiléan N Chuilleanáin, and she is also the author of Horsepower Pass By!
