Four Hedges by Clare Leighton
In 1930 Clare Leighton bought a plot of land on a sloping site in the Chilterns. Here, she and Noel Brailsford built a house and created a garden from the "rough meadowland". This book tells of a year in the life of that garden. The author portrays the seasonal changes, from the unfurling of the iris stylosa in the dead of winter, to the warmth of June when the garden belongs to the birds. The text is illustrated with Clare's own wood engravings.Clare Leighton (1898-1989) studied art at the Brighton, Slade, and Central schools of art in London. Her travels in Europe instilled in her a sense of empathy for rural people and their culture, which she expressed in much of her art. She is most known as a wood engraver who prompted a rebirth of the trade in Britain and North America. She is an outstanding writer, designer, and artist. She illustrated works by Thomas Hardy, Gilbert White, and Henry David Thoreau, as well as her own Four Hedges, Rural Matters, The Farmer's Year, and Southern Harvest (all published by Little Toller). The British Museum in London, the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, and the Art Institute of Chicago all include her work in their collections.
