From Trust to Tragedy by Lindsay Nolting
When he was appointed ambassador to South Vietnam by President Kennedy, Frederick Nolting remembers a friend warning him that Vietnam puts a blight on everyone who touches it--a blight of frustration, futility, and failure.
FREDERICK NOLTING, Professor Emeritus at the University of Virginia, was the American Ambassador to South Vietnam from 1961 to 1963. Prior to that, he was assigned to NATO Headquaters and in 1957 became Deputy Chief of the U.S. Delegation to NATO and the Organization for European Economic Cooperation and Alternate U.S. Representation to the North Atlantic Council. Ambassador Nolting retired from the State Department in 1964 after twenty-two years of government service.
