Galileo's Salad by John Heath-Stubbs
John Heath-Stubbs's new book is more elegiac, but no less firm in its celebrations, than his last, Sweetapple Earth (1993). No poet since Auden has had the technical resources Heath-Stubbs deploys in his wonderfully various work. He is a poet on a substantial scale, ranging over the literatures of Europe and the Mediterranean. Intimate with classical and biblical traditions, his tone is never earnest: he has a fine sense of humor and a wry way of commenting on modern life.John Heath-Stubbs was born in 1918 and went to Queens College, Oxford, for his education. He has received the Queen's Gold Medal for Poetry and the famous St Augustine Cross, as well as being a critic, anthologist, and translator. Heath-Stubbs had previously published seven collections with Carcanet, as well as a Collected and Selected Poems and a compilation of his literary essays. He was given the OBE in 1988. Carcanet published his poetry for nearly three decades. On December 25, 2006, he died in London.
