Annuals, bulbs and perennials can provide a stunning display of dazzling colours and striking shapes in any garden and in every season. From daffodils and daisies to lilies and lobelia, this inspiring book shows how you can make the most of these popular plants to create a truly glorious garden throughout the year. Practical step-by-step techniques for planting in different sites and soil types are outlined, as well as expert information on preparing the ground, watering, feeding, deadheading, propagation, overwintering, environmentally-aware gardening, and recognizing and dealing with pests and diseases. A beautifully illustrated comprehensive directory of annuals, bulbs and perennials provides detailed and concise information about the origin, appearance, care and cultivation of over 350 specially recommended plants.
Richard Bird has been gardening since childhood and currently maintains a large garden where his abiding passion for plants is very evident. He has contributed to numerous publications and has been magazine editor for Focus on Plants, The Hardy Plant, Alpine Gardening and the Alpine Garden Society's magazine Bulletin. He is also the author of Pruning, Training & Topiary, and The Fruit & Vegetable Gardener and Essential Plants for the Garden (all published by Lorenz Books). Kathy Brown is well known for her imaginative plant combinations, both in the garden and in containers, which demonstrate an artist's eye for colour and texture, as well as an experienced gardener's knowledge of plants. She regularly broadcasts and lectures, and has written a number of books on the subject, including Creative Container Gardening, Create a Cottage Garden and Edible Flowers (Aquamarine). Kathy's own garden is open to the public under the National Garden Scheme and has a starred entry in the Good Gardens Guide.
