Gardening for Roof Terraces and Balconies by Michele Osborne

This work includes numerous roof terrace and balcony designs that provide inspiration to suit the diverse tastes and lifestyles of all aspiring rooftop gardeners. It contains practical case studies that include a terrace for entertaining, a living space for all the family, an area of relaxation and contemplation, and a richly planted roof garden in New York. Each case study features a garden plan, as well as practical advice on the main design feature and a useful plant list. Roof terraces and balconies are oases in the urban landscape. A viewing platform, a theatre set, a place of retreat...the roof garden fulfils many needs in the city. The book shows how to create a stylish and unique rooftop space, whether for entertaining, sunbathing or simply admiring the view. Michele Osbourne, an acclaimed garden designer, celebrates the elevated garden, showing that there is little to beat the rooftop for experiencing an exhilarating sense of space and light and for enjoying panoramic views of the city skyline. She describes a range of possible styles and themes for a roof terrace or balcony with inspirational ideas for formal and informal designs, spaces for entertaining, Mediterranean and country-style settings, contemplative spaces and modern showcases. This lavishly illustrated book is ideal for anyone setting out to design a roof terrace or balcony garden, or looking for new and exciting ideas to transform an existing rooftop space.
'Some city-dwellers think that making a roof garden is an easy short-cut to heaven on earth (or at least just above it)In reality, roof gardens are a pretty specialised from of garden design, and the conditions for plants are as tough as they come. Here at last is a book that will help you to make one successfully.' Stephen Anderton, The Times gardener.
Michele Osbourne graduated from the Sorbonne in Paris as a linguist before moving to England. Her passion for art and architecture inspired her to become a landscape designer, and she began practising in 1984. She has since completed many projects both in England and abroad, working increasingly with developers and architects. She won the prestigious Guardian's Britannia Homebuilder's Award for Best Landscaping. Designing many roof terraces in London's East End and Docklands allowed her to discover views of the city, which she found so exhilarating that she decided to abandon her Victorian terraced house in favour of a converted telephone exchange, where she could build her own roof garden.
