The Go-Between by L P Hartley
LP Hartley's great classic, THE GO-BETWEEN is a gripping evocation of a summer of hope and betrayal. An invitation to a friend's house changes a boy's life. Discovering an old diary, Leo, now in his sixties, is drawn back to the hot summer of 1900 and his visit to Brandham Hall. The past comes to life as Leo recalls the events and devastating outcome that destroyed his beliefs and future hopes.
Leslie Poles Hartley was born in Cambridgeshire in 1895 and went to Harrow and Oxford. He served in the First World War and for thirty years was a book reviewer for various periodicals. He published the first volume of a trilogy,The Shrimp and the Anemone, in 1944. It was followed by The Sixth Heaven and the best known of the three, Eustace and Hilda. His other novels include The Boat, THE GO-BETWEEN, and The Hireling. LP Hartley was awarded the CBE in 1956 and died in 1972.
