
The Gondolier's Cat by William Corlett
Nini the cat lives with Gino the Gondolier in a house on the Grand Canal in Venice. He longs to win the paw of La Serenissima, the cat of the Doge's daughter. When the Princess is kidnapped, Nini has his chance to prove his courage. Krystyna Turska also illustrated "Coppelia" and "Benny's Visit".Following his education at Fettes College in Edinburgh, William Corlett studied acting at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art in London. He began creating plays for the stage soon after, notably The Gentle Avalanche and Return Ticket, both of which were shown in London. Several television dramas followed, including the award-winning series Barriers, for which he won the Writers' Guild Award for Best Children's Writer and the New York International Film and Television Festival's Gold Award. Another Writers' Guild Award for Best Children's Writer went to him for his writing for the children's series The Paper Lads. William published a series of young adult novels between 1978 and 1988, including The Gate of Eden, The Land Beyond, Return to the Gate, The Dark Side of the Moon, Bloxworth Blue, and The Hidden Line.
He also co-wrote The Question Series, a collection of six books exploring different religions from around the world. In 1990, Edinburgh Films filmed his adaptation of the Jill Paton Walsh novel Torch, which garnered him another nomination for the Writers' Guild Best Children's Writer of the Year Award. In addition, his BBC version of Elizabeth Goudge's novel The Little White Horse earned a Silver Prize at the New York International Film and Television Festival in 1994. The Magician's House Quartet, written by William Corlett and published by The Bodley Head in London, has just been adapted into a major BBC television series.
His most recent novel for young readers is The Summer of the Haunting, a contemporary ghost story.
