Grand Days by Frank Moorhouse
Set in Geneva in the inter-war period, this book conveys all the high idealism of that benighted period in European history. It charts the rite of passage of Edith Berry, from wilfulness and self-delusion to a more humble and realistic understanding of what one human being can hope to achieve.
Frank Moorhouse worked as an editor of small-town newspapers and as an administrator, and in the 1970s became a full-time writer. He is the author of Dark Palace, Forty Seventeen, Grand Days, and Satanic Killings. He was made a member of the Order of Australia for services to literature in 1985, and was awarded an honorary doctorate from Griffith University in 1997.
