The Green Ray by Jules Verne

This new edition of The Green Ray brings the rarely available title by the famous French author Jules Verne to a new generation. The mysterious scientific phenomenon of the green ray is unpredictable and elusive. When Helena hears of its apparent mystical effects on the mind and soul she enlists her uncles and two very different suitors, one artist and one amateur scientist, to find it. They travel to Scotland to seek to catch a glimpse of green rays which shoot out from the sunset. Their numerous attempts are always unsuccessful, thwarted by clouds or boats blocking the sun, until finally the phenomenon is visible, but they are no longer watching the horizon.

It is a charming literary work, very sweer, very simple and very sensitive - PIERRE-JULES HETZEL

Of all Verne's novels, The Green Ray most closely follows his own travel... written with affection and personal recollection... close to his heart. - PROFESSOR IAN THOMPSON

Luath Press is an Edinburgh publishing house that produces gorgeous Verne paperbacks with full-page original illustrations so crystal clear you want to weep with joy. Like their Blockade Runners and Underground City, this one is a feast of production values and readability. You want The Green Ray on your Verne shelf, believe me. - NICK DIMARTINO

Jules Verne was born in 1828, in Nantes, France. In 1847 he studied Law in Paris, but this was not his main passion in life. He enjoyed writing more than anything, and his first play was published in 1850. He was Scottish on his mother's side and developed a profound interest in Scotland. Also a keen geographer, he spent many hours in Paris libraries studying engineering and astronomy researching his first novel, Five Weeks in a Balloon, which was published in 1863. A year later he published one of his most famous novels, Journey to the Centre of the Earth and Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea was published in 1873. He wrote prolifically through the rest of his life (54 novels) and died in 1905.
