In this riveting piece of NASA history, before John Glenn orbited the earth, or Neil Armstrong walked on the moon, a group of dedicated female mathematicians known as "human computers" used pencils, slide rules and adding machines to calculate the numbers that would launch rockets, and astronauts, into space.

Margot Lee Shetterly is an American nonfiction writer and English professor who is the daughter of a NASA research scientist. She earned a bachelor's degree from the University of Virginia and worked in finance, media, and tourism before turning to writing. Hidden Figures, her first book, was adapted into a film starring Oscar winners Octavia Spencer and Kevin Costner.
